Looking at purchasing a 1903 2nd Change Hand Ejector. If I purchase the revolver it will be done over the phone and pictures. Since I have not purchased a revolver of this vintage I am looking for advice on what to look for and what to ask about. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Are markings crisp?

Are edges sharp?

Does the bluing have a deep blue to it or is it a glossy, wavy black?

Is it mechanically sound?

Do all serial numbers match?

Is the barrel length in accordance with known barrel lengths?

Does it have a factory letter?

Do the stocks fit well and is a serial number penciled inside the grip?

Does it chamber a round properly?

What's the condition of the bore?

What's the asking price?

Are detailed photographs available you can post to this thread?

The last two are for our edification and to help you.

The first ones are the ones you should be asking and others will think of some I missed.

The first question would/should be, "why am I purchasing this revolver?"

Is it for shooting, collecting, wall hanging etc.?

Normally price and condition are factors. Many will say like real estate's, location, location, location, with firearms it is condition, condition, condition.

If collecting, the condition rule typically is paramount. As a shooter it can be less important but for most still important. Function is more of a concern. As a wall hanger, typically this does not apply.

Condition and rarity will have a bearing on price regardless of reason for buying.

Do you know the value range for the firearm being considered? Searching online sold auctions will usually give one a good idea of the market. No one wants to spend $600 on a $300 gun.

So that is the way that I look at gun purchases. I have bought many sight unseen (except photos) online with great success. Does the seller offer a return policy or is it a no return situation. I am always skeptical of "no return" policies. I understand the sellers concern that parts can be removed/replaced etc. before being returned but still makes me nervous.

Either way get lots of photos and ask all of your questions up front.

The comments and list above are excellent.

Good luck....
