FOR ME, it's 9mm, first grab pistol, if second grab needed, carbine. Alternate grab revolver of some variety loaded with .38. If things got really hairy, I could pull out the 12 ga. shotgun or AR. So that boils down to:

1) 9mm
2) .38 Special (standard loads)
3) .223 or 12 ga.

Being unreal, the most unreal handgun would be the Pfeifer-Zeliska .600 Nitro Express Revolver. It is the biggest handgun in the world.

Being realistic, any weapon you have at your disposal and are proficient with. Remember, people have been killed with guns as small as .177 (BB gun) and of course up.

I used to be the Elmer Keith / Jeff Cooper guy.If the cartridge didn't start with .4 then it was a no go. I've changed and not carry a custom .22TCM all the time. I've seen test for penetration and ballistics gel that were great but shooting armadillos convinced me. I would shoot one of these creatures with a .45 HP or a .357 HP and the same thing happened. They would jump 2 feet in the air and flop around until they ran out of blood. I've hit 7 with the ,22 TCM at various ranges and in various parts of their body and the result is always the same. They fall over and their feet twitch. That's all they do as I believe the hydro-static shock of the little 2,000 FPS bullets behaves like a rifle.

It is a custom that I built. I took a match top end and fitted it to a old school Para Ord. aluminum frame. It is easier than the steel guns to carry and I have 17 rounds on tap.
