We like them all in this house. My wife found this chunky black rat snake at the barn where she keeps her horse. One of the chickens dropped an egg in the hay room. Snake found it and Chicken freaked out. Mrs. NCBeagle to the rescue. Chicken, egg, and snake are all safe.

An unusually brave woman!

We used to catch blacksnakes when we were kids by using a stick to pin them behind the head and then picking them up by grasping the same behind-the-head spot.

My mother told a story of her grandmother, as a child, being discovered walking up the drive to her house carrying a rattlesnake by its tail and whacking it with her bonnet every time it would raise it's head.

When I used to raise chickens I was always finding rat snakes in my coop. They would crawl in through the chicken wire and eat the eggs and then they could not crawl back through the wire because they were too fat.

I grew up in Charlotte. The most common snakes I recall were the fat moccasins all around the lakes. Those things had no fear of humans!

Just doing what snakes do. Nothing to see here....until your wife wrangles it. That's a bit of a show!
When we were breeding kings, corns and rat snakes my wife would reluctantly pick up the occasional escapees and return them to their enclosures (more securely of course).

Here is a Texas rat snake I found in our living room a couple of years ago. Since we don't get a lot of snakes in our living room, I wasn't sure what kind it was. I called our town's animal control office, and the young woman who came out identified it as a rat snake. It was a bit hard to retrieve, as it had wedged itself between a stair step and the protection of a statue of St. Francis, patron saint of animals (smart snake!). The snake was released to go eat some more rats and eggs.
