I have been retired for a year and a half after 40+ years of service. In order to comply with the requirements to carry as a retired officer I went to the range today for departmental qualifications. Took my first duty weapon a model 66-1 my first off duty piece a model 60 and one of my latest acquisitions a 586 with 6” barrel. I did manage to shoot a qualifying score with all 3 revolvers but as expected the model 60 was the most difficult to shoot well. Felt great to shoot these classics and to shoot them pretty well.

This past spring I qualified with my Colt Commander and
a S&W model 12 2 inch.
The wife her model 66 ND and a model 36 2inch.
The pups at the range look at us like dinosaurs.

I feel like a caveman too.

But to keep it in perspective the Police Department I retired from stopped issuing revolvers 35 years ago. After I retired I was the last of the 1911 crowd too. Now it has been Glocks only but they approve 45 ACP, 40 S&W and 9mm.

Ah, yes. I, too, qualify with my revolvers. This year, I shot a 4 inch 66. When the firearms instructor and I were walking back to the line, a group of young officers had gathered. They had never seen anyone shoot a revolver. Cleaned it a little, recharged with duty loads and reholstered into the black basketweave leather.

My dept never issued weapons and still doesn’t. An officer was killed in the line of duty in a neighboring town in 1991. The story goes he was reloading his revolver when he suffered a fatal wound. The few officers that carried revolvers switched quickly after that. My dept had approved handguns we could carry all at the officers expense. I was fortunate enough to be named Chief in March of 2020 and one of the changes I instituted was to heavily encourage my officers to carry a Glock 17, even though I was a dyed in the wool 1911 guy. The officers still could carry other platforms but we would only buy 9mm ammo (we had Thousands of .40 and .45 rounds in our armory.) The biggest factor in my decision was holster availability and trying to keep holsters in stock to keep everybody up and running. We were having to beg and borrow at times to outfit our guys. Then with different light rails and a variety of lights compounded the issue.
