Question about a 686+ vs a 686

In one of the post on here I read that the size of the cylinders on the 686+ (7 shot) and the 686 (6 shot) were the same. If this is true can you swap cylinders between a 686-6+ and a 686 no dash? Not a home gunsmith just wondering if this is possible. Thanks.

I am certainly not a gunsmith, but, I think it would be much more complicated than that because of timing issues. It would seem to me that the internal parts would have to be redone as well if it is even possible.

It can be done, but it's more than just a cylinder swap. Do a search on here and you will find some threads that go into more detail. But if all you wanted to know is, "Can it be done?" the answer is yes.

I'm guessing it would be cheaper and more trouble free to just sell and buy what you want.

Thanks for the info. I was just thinking (not good for an old geezer) that if they were the same size if you could swap them back and forth. Know now that can't be done.

A year or so ago I converted 2 S&W model 681 to 7 shot revolvers, the 681 is the same gun as the 686 except it has fixed sights. The first one was fairly easy, just swapping a few parts with very little hand fitting. The second one was more involved--endshake, barrel to cylinder had to be set and the timing was off. Was it worth it, I think so but others may not.

Is it just one part that determines whether the cylinder rotates 60° for each pull of the trigger on the 6 shot vs 51.43° for each pull on the 7 shot? Just a difference in length of some part maybe?
