Last week at the range the spring and detent on the slide stop flew off my Model 39-2 clone out while I was firing for qualification. It caused the slide to lock back after each shot. My Model 39-2 clone is an aftermarket stainless frame fitted with Smith parts and a Model 39 upper half.
This is the first time I have ever seen or heard of a S&W slide stop coming apart and I've handled and shot quite a few different Smith and Wesson models over the years.

My question is does a new/replacement stop need to be fitted or adjusted or is it a drop in piece? The cost of purchasing the spring and parts plus shipping cost as much as ordering a used part off the internet.

Your response is greatly appreciated.

The only one I ever installed in a 3913LS was an aftermarket one & had to be fit, It required about 3mms be ground off to fit in the frame opening, I started with a dremel & finsihed up with a jewlers file..
I too would try an aquire the parts to rebuild the one you already have.
Have you tried cantacting S&W?? They have great customer service..
They may even send you the parts for FREE..
Good Luck!!

your going to need three hands to hold the spring pin and the other two the hold the punch and hammer.

I made a rough cut out of wood to countersink the slide stop to retain the spring and detent, then I tapped the spring pin in.

pain in the hinney!

Thanks for your responses. My hands are becoming arthritic and I don't do well with small parts. I found a new stop and ordered it. I'll post as soon as I get the chance to install it.

I received the part this morning in the mail. It slid in and functioned well through to 14 rds. I loaded two rds in a magazine and fired them to see if the slide stop would work. No problems.
