Question about Bushnell TRS-25

I wanted to ask this on the thread about failing and different eyesight problems but I thought I'd start a new one.

I'm thinking about putting a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot sight on a 44 magnum lever gun. I've never shot one of these and know nothing about them but what I have read. Has anyone used one of these on a rifle or handgun? What are your thoughts and recommendations about them? I know there is no magnification and I would probably only be shooting this at 50 yards.

I bought one to try out a red dot on my M&P9 fs. I've probably fired 100 or so rounds under it and have had no problems. Put it on my 1522 just for fun and it performed well. Seemed to hold zero fine and was pretty easy to get zeroed. For the money, I felt like I got my money's worth.

I had one on an M&P 15-22. It's a nice little red dot for the money. I had non issues of the dot dissappearing near thenedge of the viewing field like some have reported. FYI: Cabelas was selling them for $30-$40 cheaper on sale than Academy so I showed them and they matched the price.

Does the TRS-25 have to be mounted on a picatinny rail?
Is eye relief critical? What is the right distance to mount from your eye?
As I said I'm not familiar with these at all.

I believe so, yes. Eye distance is whatever is most comfortable.

I've had one for a few years. Had it mounted on everything from a .22 pistol to an M4 Benelli shotgun and it worked fine. Eye relief is not at all critical - you can put it clear out on the end of a 16" barrel if the rail goes that far and you like it out there. Some do. I have not tried it but I suspect you could mount it on a Weaver-type base as well as a rail. The one thing I would suggest you consider is something with a longer battery life. The TRS's is OK, but some of the newer ones have as much as 50,000 hours. That's nice if you don't want to worry about forgetting to turn off the red dot when you're done with it.

One more question.
Would the low mount be the best to use compared to the high rise? That's the only 2 that I've seen offer for sale.

A low mount would be best on anything other then a AR platform. I have two TRS-32s which is the larger version made by Bushnell and I like them.

Pay attention to dot size on these.
Larger dots for speed, smaller for precision shooting.
That's why I prefer optics with variable dot sizes.
