Question About Grip Adapters

I just received my first one, and installed it on my 19-3 2.5". It feels great, but I noticed it left some faint marks on the grips (nothing on the metal). I am not terribly concerned as while it is in very nice shape, it is not flawless, but it does raise some questions. I see people post pictures all the time on here of very fine and rare guns with Tyler Ts or other types of grip adapters. Surely they must leave some evidence of their use. Do people just accept that the gun will show a little more wear, decide they will never remove the grip adapters (or never sell the gun) so it doesn't matter, or just haven't thought about it?

I have used T Grips for years on my J & K Frames. The grips leave a very faint mark on the stocks where they touch. I don't worry about what will happen in the future with my guns. Most of them are shooters. Should I decide to sell one, the buyer can refuse the purchase or not if he dosen't like the mark. The two J frames shown are my carry guns. I carry the M38-2 in my Galco Ankle Glove and and the M638 is my belt gun.

I, too like them on carry guns. In my experience, the BK adapters (made by a forum member) fit a little better than the Tylers ones. In the case of my M60, it had seen many different grips in 35+ years. When I got the S&W "retro" stocks, they were oversize, so I filed them to fit the Tyler and refinished:

In the case of my M34-1, the BK adapter (and stocks) fit perfectly:

While Tyler is now experiencing somewhat of a "craze" due to their discontinuance (imo), various other adaptors are also original kit so to speak such as Pachmeyers and others that were plastic (or should I now say polymer :) ). Never a mark with those, just saying.

I think the previous posters though kind of hit the nail on the head. Just never an issue for most folks and the only remedy I know if, if it REALLY bothers you, is to purchase a second grip set for "show" and use your adaptor for "go". Or vice versa. :)

Hope this helps.

I like the look of the grip adapters, but...

...how in the heck do those grip adapters actually attach to the frame? I'm new to Smith revolvers and have never actually looked at one of the frames close up to know.

I'd like to get a nice J/K frame and would like the adapters.

Thanks

Tony S.

Got one Tyler T and three BK grip adapters. Fit of the BK grips adapters is much better, and they feel more secure. Just my two cents.

I use Tyler and other brands of grip adapters to fill in the deeply scooped out space behind the trigger guard to better align my hand and trigger finger. I shoot better with the adapter, especially double action. I do not put them on for "looks". However, to my eye a revolver with an adapter does look good in a "businesslike" kind of way.

Obviously, if an adapter is put on to improve shooting qualities, then one would just accept the minor marring of mating surfaces as unavoidable and carry on. It is just like holster wear at the muzzle and on the cylinder. You wouldn't normally put an adapter on a safe queen that was NIB, which you expected to sale someday for a profit or as a collectable.

I bought a Pachmayr for my 28-2 last month that turned out to be useless for me. The adapter had set of another revolver, a 1917, long enough to take a 'set' and didn't fit on my HP without removal of enough material to fit. When I got it installed I found there to be a lot of creaky-ness and shifting, as the tabs didn't grip the frame as they did when new. I tossed it in my parts box and chalked it up to a learning experience.

I have no real preference for my adaptors. I have a Tyler T on my 27-2

I wondered what these did for you. I would have never guessed they would help anything but I'd like to hold or shoot a gun with them just to see. Thanks for posting these. My wife carries a J frame 442, so it's interesting to think this could help in some way. I guess the CT laser grips would not be compatible.

My wifes (used to be mine :() 65-3

She loves the Tyler adapter.

Does anyone know where there is a listing of the part numbers for the Pachmayr grip adaptors? I need one for a post-War I-frame.

Froggie, I do not believe Pachmayr grip adaptors are still available.

Thanks, Rich. I knew that, but since they show up NOS or used at gun shows and older gun shops, I thought if I knew which number to look for in the junk boxes, etc. I might get lucky. Somewhere, stashed away from a previous life I already have about a dozen of them in faded, tattered boxes. What you wanna bet none of them is the one I need?

Howdy GreenFrog,
I've got a Pachmmayr 8M adapter you can have. Where in Va.
are you located?? The 8M is supposed to fit a "J" frame, but it
is slightly off, maybe a better fit for an"I".

C-6, I'm a couple of hours West of you in Lynchburg. I get down that way fairly often, so I'll drop you a PM. From the chart provided by -db- it looks like it will be necessary to actually find a #2.

BTW, thanks for the chart,-db- it was just what I needed.:D
