Hey all.

I was looking on the S&W site the other night and seen that there are several models of 629 and 29 listed as current. No Mountain Guns though.
Anyway I came up on a TALO 629 and it is a beauty. I think its the 629-6 DELUXE with 3 inch barrel. I really like the looks of this one more than many of the snub 44 Mag's I have liked over the years.
One feature that set it apart for me was the compact grips. They looked like K-frame round butt snub grips. They don't look much bigger than the factory stocks on my M65-5 3 inch, which I really like with the T-grip.
That made me think about what kind and size grip frame is on all of those 44mags that S&W is currently making. Are they all small and round butted under those BIG and BEEFY N frame stocks that are normally seen on these sized revolvers? Did that TALO version that I am liking have special grip frame work done to it to accommodate those compact grips?
I also looked on the MagnaPort site for info on their BIG BORE SNUB packages. They list the grip work done as being K-frame round butting. I would guess that is what is on that TALO 629 with the 3 inch barrel I mentioned liking so much. Would you agree?

If possible I would like for someone that has a new or pretty new 29 or 629 to post a pic with the grips off so the grip frame can be seen. I'd like to know if all current 29 and 629 models have this type of grip frame as standard now and if so how long has this style grip frame been standard? Will ALL new model 629 and 29 revolvers accept round butt grips like those on that 629 Deluxe 3 inch?

Thanks for your time and help. Sorry for the long message.

Hello Nallapombu,

They have made exceptions for special runs of square butts recently, but other wise, S&W stopped all square butt revolver frame production in 1996. So, yes most of their newer large revolvers are wearing round butt to square butt conversion stocks and so far as I know all post 1996 629s could wear the stock you found on the Talo 629. However, a K frame stock installed on an N frame leaves a portion of the back strap extending out behind the stock. Some confusion has arisen from the marketing of laser grips that were supposed to be a compromise to fit both K and N frames or used a spacer to fill in the gap. You can tell a stock is for N frames because the flat spot on the rear that fits up under the frame behind the round medalion is longer.

I like 629s, but the recoil of standard magnum cartridges will hurt with small wood stocks like you are describing.

M629-8

Mine came with these RB plywood wooden grips with "fish scale checkering". They are the worst grips I have ever used, and the only ones which have torn skin from the side of my thumb. That was while shooting full power loads. I replaced them with Jerry Micchhduduelklleieifdksccckk (however you spell it) grips, which I actually liked much better. Right now I have a set of rubbers from my 625 Mountain Gun on it. Ugly, but very functional.

I put on my 29 Classic a set of rubber that you usually find on a S&W 500 (this Hogue grip fits K to X round butt frames). Ugly but functionnal, as said before, especially when I shoot some .44 mag. IMI rounds.
