Question about Neal/Jink's books

Hi, I have not seen one of these.
I want one.

I have seen what seems to be an indication that the reprint differs from the original?

I do not want one for collectability, I want one for the info.


What is missing from the reprint, if anything.

All I want is the pictures and text?

Maybe later I'll want a 'collector' issue?

You'll want the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition, it's the latest one and has the most up to date info (although the prices listed in it are already out of date).

Edit: Sorry I was thinking of the wrong book, but still required reading for the S&W fanatic...

Gig-a-hertz, the revised book by Neal And Jinks,
Smith and Wesson 1857 -1945, 1966 and reprinted again in 1975. Models are designated
by the factory terminology, Model 1, Model 1 1/2,
Model 3, etc. through I,K,M and N models. They have done this to help clarify and explain the different models prior to 1945.
Another point made is that S&W made design changes
effective as of a specific date not by a specific
serial number and have attempted to identify serial number ranges as accurately as factory records have allowed.They also make the point that overlapping serial numbers exist from one
design/model change to another.
I have a copy of this book and it has been a valuable resource to identify model changes.,

There are two editions of the Neal & Jinks book - this has nothing to do with SCSW.
I don't know anything about a reprint - I assume that is referring to the second edition.

The first edition is generally much more expensive, whereas a decent second edition
is not all that costly. Both contain all the information that you would find
relevant. There were some changes, but nothing that would be important to you.

I'm a bit of a bibliophile, so I'll chime in here.
Smith & Wesson 1857-1945 was printed THREE times. The FIRST Edition, ©1966, is a thinner book than later editions and has different dust jacket photography- predominant color being red. The REVISED edition came out in 1975.
Unless you collect books on S&W, you DO NOT want the First Edition. It contains LESS data, and, I have been told, some errors. Never read it- read the Revised edition instead.
The later reprint is OK, but I don't think the pics are as clear- esp the X-rays. Also- when Barnes, the original publisher folded, they failed to protect the copyrights, and they entered the public domain. So, Roy Jinks and Bob Neal got screwed out of any royalties on the book.

The book you want is the REVISED EDITION by BARNES, ©1966 and 1975.
