Question about PayPal PLEASE NO TAR AND FEATHERS

I just feel better with them not being linked to my bank account in case they are hacked. What I like about using a CC is it gives you one more level of protection in case of a dispute with a seller.

you relinquish many of your credit card rights + protections when you agree to the Pay Pal agreement terms -

I have a separate checking account linked to my PP account. (It is a free "no fee" checking account available through my bank.)

Whenever I sell something and accept PP, I immediately transfer the $ out of the checking account into a regular account.

Whenever I use PP to buy something I transfer the required amount into the linked account.

This "account" usually carries a $0.00 balance and PP can freeze it at their pleasure or try to get money from a 0 balance.

I know this seems to be a lot of work, but I'm not that active with on-line buying and selling.

no Pay Pal is in complete control + resolutions can be days or months - pay attention to the agreement areas that states [ Pay Pal reserves the rights to ----------- ] -

I do the same , but I leave a $10.00 balance in linked bank account -

I posted this on another gun oriented forum and I think they want to lynch me. But I seriously want someone to explain how this system works. I admit I'm a dinosaur. A real 20th century man.

I see lots of places (ebay, some of our classified sales transactions, lots of online merchants) use PayPal. I never have, mostly because I don't know what it is. Is there any advantage to using that as opposed to just using a credit card? I understand they are basically an anti gun organization, but they also happen to be a dominant force in online commerce and purchasing.

So my question is, how does it/they work, and am I missing out on anything by not using it?

Here is some "light" reading for you. There is lot of "stuff" in there!

You can not use (per PP) fro firearms or related.

I know a lot of people use PP for foreign transactions for the protections it supposedly gives. Return shipping on a defective product sometimes costs more than the product. Usually they stand with the buyer but it is not guaranteed . It also protects your CC info from potential abuse so it is pretty much needed for that reason alone.

I’ve used it, I remain wary of it and won’t ever link my bank account to it.
Credit card has its coverage for safety.
I like that the CC info goes to one place and not to all the places I’m buying something. Pay pal pays them and I pay PayPal.
Law of averages protection I guess.
No problem so far but I use it as little as possible.

I hadn't heard of this service and I can't find much about it's reputation.
(Too new??)
I will wait to see what kind of experience others have with them.
I did notice in their advertisement that: "If you're not in a hurry" they are the way to go". This makes me wonder just how slow the turnaround is or will be.

Only time will tell...........

Thank you for all the great replies. Still not sure I need this, I could just continue to use a cc for purchases. Generally I do not sell online.

However, I may do it, as I am in the position of possibly selling some very pricey musical instruments through some online forums. I could open a neutral bank checking account to do that, and when everything is sold just close it all down.

PP is also good to have for Ebay purchases. There is a good selection of holsters there.

I like & use PayPal for online purchases. It's not connected to any bank account, only a credit card & they don't charge me, the buyer, a fee. On occasion I've had issues w/ sellers not wanting to refund for bad items & when notified PayPal instantly refunded my money. How they deal w/ the seller is now their problem & no longer mine. As far as not dealing w/ gun issues try writing a check to a gun store from Bank Of America - they won't honor the check from your account in their bank., which is why we no longer have a BOA account & I told them why when I closed it.

I sell on ebay quite a bit. I have nevr had my account there tied to my checking account in my bank. I do have a debit card and they have a credit card attached...but don't really need to use it. I keep a minimal amount usually in the debit account. It did get hacked once...but paypal made it good in short order. Although I have sold a bunch of firearm related items never had a problem...I even bought many years ago a Perazzi shotgun in 4 parts from a fellow in Canada. Paid with Paypal and shipped right to my door

I would delete your Perazzi from Canada post - federal offense + no statue of limitations on ITAR + other international firearms trade - buyers are just as guilty + liable as sellers in international arms trade violations

My brother used PayPal a lot. He's a seller on ebay. He also does desktop printing. He put large sum of money from his bank account into PayPal to pay for some equipment for publishing. PP locked the account. PP deemed it suspicious. PP ignored anything he had to say. MANY MONTHS went by. He lost out on the equipment. I don't if he's got his money back yet.

I avoid PP as much as possible. I avoided their tricks to gain access to my bank account information. IF PP can deposit a few pennies IN, PP can also take money out. I only do PayPal through a credit card who will go to bat for me.

Generally, a CC does.

But AFA PayPal, all it would cover would be Paypal's
transfer of funds to seller/whatever. Paypal would
tell CC/financial institution they did the fund transfer,
and CC/financial institution might well wash their
hands of a disputed charge, saying "Paypal did what
their contract with you specifies". You might get
lucky, if you're a big depositor at a credit union,
say...but I wouldn't count on it.

So if you had problem with goods or services from
the vendor, the CC wouldn't cover. Paypal *would*,
under their terms/contract--as long as you didn't
do the transaction as "friends and family". In that
case, you have zero recourse...nada, zip, zilch.

Doesn't mean every stranger who want's payment
'PP friends & family' is a fraud and scamster...

Amazing that people will use PayPal when most gun people are the first to boycott or refused to deal with anti gun places like Dicks. Panera bread, Starbucks, but PP is OK??

I think you have to pick your fights. If I stopped using/doing business with companies that had a philosophy with which I disagreed my purchases would be very limited.
