I'm curious to know if I can use small rifle primers to load small handgun cases? I can get some small rifle now and would like to be able to reload again for 38/357. I would also like to know what are the differences in the two primers if any?

The riflle primers have thicker metal and may not fire if your revolver hammer spring is below par.

If that's all you have then that's what you will have to use. Unlike LP and LR primers SP and SR primers are exactly the same height. They will fit physically but of course you should use all the normal precautions when working up a new load. Depending upon the manufacturer the SR primers may be a little hotter than the SPM primers you now use. Like said above, if you own a revolver that has a light strike spring for the hammer you may not be able to set off the SR primer. If they do work you're alright. Make up a small test batch and let us know how they work out.

The above information is similar to what I have experienced. The rifle primers are a little stronger mettle to handle the higher pressures of rifles. You may have problems if your gun has a week main spring. Load five or six test round and try them (start with the the lowest load listed and work up). Good luck maybe the supply of primers will catch up soon : Bill
