Hello All-

Can anyone answer me this:

Does the j frame grip available from S&W at the link below cover the backstrap AND will it cover the frame all the way to the top of the backstrap on a 642 AND is it wider than the compact rubber S&W with open backstrap? Oh, and if its not to much trouble for those with the ability - can anyone post pics looking at the back strap of the boot grip compared to the rubber factory grip so I can compare widths? I'd appreciate it tons! (I don't ask for too much do I?)

Thank you in advance for your assistance! :)

That grip has an open backstrap and does not go all the way up on a Centennial frame (as far as I know, the only boot grip made with horns high enough for Centennials is made by Craig Spegel). I have no idea how it compares width-wise.

I bought the Uncle mikes boot grips, if your like me and you want the ability to use your speed loader on your 642 you will quickly find the stock grips make it a pain in the arse. The uncle mikes grips are a little thinner, but better for conceal carry, still easy to handle and they allow for room of the speed loader :) I know thats not really the info you where looking for but thought I would throw it out there any way.

Thanks DB - The Spegel is the only one I've been able to confirm that goes all the way to the top. I use a very high hold and/or have big hands so I'm looking for one that goes to the top.

Thanks 9399 - the Uncle Mikes is highly recommended as well. I'm not sure about the speed loader or speed strips, could go either way. But I am looking for a fatter grip that will dispurse recoil a bit more allowing for more pleasant extended shooting sessions.

Over the decades, I've tried just about every J-frame grip made and settled awhile ago on the SJ-C Pachmayr Compacs. At one time, the Colt Detective Special was shipped from the factory with these grips and they're a good choice for snub-nosed revolvers.

They're not the smallest grips for the J-frame, but they're not overly big either and they really soak up the recoil. I have these on my M&P 340 and these grips makes the recoil generated by the Remington .357 Magnum 110gr SJHP ammo I carry in it tolerable and controllable. They don't quite reach to the very top of the backstrap, but they come close.
