Question about "Tulammo"

Picked up three boxes of 9mm, 50 each from the local Walmart for $30 dollars and some change. These are 115 grain with steel cases instead of brass. The question is: Will these be ok to use with my 9mm M&P Shield? Everything that I have and used has had brass cases. BTW, these are made in Russia. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I've shot this ammo from my FS 9 and Shield with no problems.

But, that price seems pretty high.

You will have a lot of guys saying it is good ammo and is no harder on the gun than brass but I had a Glock 17 lock up tighter than a bulls butt in fly season shooting Russian steel case.. I say "emergency only" so if that is all you can get, go for it.
 
I bought a partial box of the Tul (.40) along with some other ammo from a guy that had converted to .357 sig. In my M610 the Tul FTF 4 of 6 on the first moon clip. Upon inspection it looked like some of the primers were seated too deep. I ran them through my M&P40 with no issues. That said I'd probably not buy it again.

I would never again use this stuff in any of my weapons, it seized in the barrel of one of my M&P 45's and had to be beat out of the weapon, never for self defense and only if you do not really care about your gun, you might not have this happen but those cases made of steel do not really hold up well and if they burst they will seize up in your barrel rendering the weapon inoperable!
 
My range will allow just about anything but they will not allow anyone to use Tulammo. They have had 5 catastrophic failures of different guns due to overpressure using this ammo. Forget about the steel cases you hand is not worth saving a couple of bucks per box.
 
The Tula I used today felt under pressure, it was a really light load and fed fine. (40 S&W)

The Federal I shot today was pretty hot, both 180 Gr.
 
ask 10 different people & you will get 10 different opinions...I've shot thousands of rds. of Tula in .223, .380 & 9mm with no problems except sometimes it won't lock the bolt back on last shot....just cheap practice rds. not a carry load....take care
 
I've shot a lot of Tulammo in .223 with no problems, maybe I'm just lucky. Given the current ammo availability situation I shoot whatever I can find.
 
I have heard alot of bad things about tulammo. I would stay far away from it
 
I have several thousand rounds through my Shield, my M&P Pro, and my G17. Works just fine in all three guns.

Steel case may be a little hard on your extractor, and you may have an occasional FTE, but it's way better than no ammo or over priced ammo.

Hornady Steel Match is a top notch product, and it's steel cased...

One of my local indoor range sells this stuff, but won't allow you to shoot it in their range? What's up with that?

I reload way better quality ammo than this Tulammo, and cheaper to boast tooo:D.
 
One of the local indoor ranges doesn't allow it. I asked why a while ago and their reply was several people had stuck rounds in the chamber. They were supposedly tight chambers. The people paid to have the cases removed by their "gunsmiths" which aren't really true gunsmiths. They also had people bring in their guns fired elsewhere that had rounds stuck in the chamber. They claimed they didn't like hammering a round out of the chamber. If it was a spent round I would not hesitate to beat it out. If it was a stuck live round I would take a different approach. A bit different fixture, hearing protection, and a face shield.

I have fired the Tula in my 1911's and didn't have any problems. I did notice the chambers were a little dirty afterwords. I have fired about 1K of the ammo between 08 and now. It was all I could find at the time. The polymer or the lacquer coating seemed to melt off a bit on a hot chamber. I just scrubbed it off and continued. Never a problem for me.

I have heard that it is hard on the extractor. I have not noticed it on my guns. But I don't shoot a steady diet of it either.

The military used steel cased ammo all along in WWII. They used a copper washed case.

I sure like JeffHughes comment. I have seen the ammo and I am wondering about that. Anyone that has shot that and their experience?

I've only fired 50 rds of tulammo 9mm through my compact. But I had no issues. I made sure I shot it 1st through a clean gun though. Fired the 100 rds of WWB immediately after with no issue either.


6 boxes of 9mm came into the local WalMart 5 were WWB, last was the Tulammo. Guy in front of me griped about his gun not liking a the Tul, so I took it along with 2 boxes of the WWB. Weird situation.

If you don't like shooting Tulammo, leave it on the shelves. My M&P Sport loves it, so does my pocketbook.
 
I exclusively shoot cheap ammo. So i mainly shoot Tula, Wolf, Blazer. Never had any problems

Put 100 rounds of steel cased TulAmmo .40 S&W 180gr FMJ through my FS M&P .40 and it did fine. I don't care for the ammo so I won't buy it unless it's all I can fine, but all 100 rounds went through my gun fine. Wouldn't use it for anything other than range use though.
 
I run Tul(common misconception that it's Tula, there's only one A there) pretty exclusively at the range in my Sport because I'm running a slidefire and when 30 rounds takes about 3 seconds, price is a pretty big factor. Haven't had a single FT-anything with it or a stuck casing in my chamber. And that's going through a LOT of steel in a very small time. Everyone could have different results, so just run some and see how you like it. I would personally never use it as my carry ammo though. Just because I'm a pretty firm believer in "you get what you pay for". Even if I might pay little more for a gimmick, I know in the long run it's still better and when it comes to my, the woman I love, and the life of my unborn child, is the savings really worth it?

No. Its Tula Ammo they just write it with one "A" for both. Like ....Tul A mmo.

Tula is a Russian city and houses a factory by the same name. Tula factory makes AKs amongst other weapons. If you have ever seen or heard of the TT-33 handgun it stands for Tula (factory where it was made) Tokarev (inventor) 33 (year 1933)

As long as you inspect each cartridge before use I wouldn't worry about it. I've seem so really bad winchester from the factory.
 
So many opinions. I have shot a couple hundred rounds through my Beretta 92GSD and had no problems.

I stand corrected. Another case of being misinformed and believing it. My apologies. Speaking of this stuff, I just recently found a couple boxes that got pretty wet and rusted. I'm not going to try them, but how should I properly dispose of them? Don't just wanna throw them away so they end up in the dump or something

What cal? And how rusted? Usually i dispose of my by sending it down range.

I used to be against Tulammo. Used to. Until one buddy kept buying the stuff for his 9mm and another bought it for his M&P Sport. Each time I used some of their ammo and never had a problem. Then I realized that maybe I was against Tulammo due to hearing that someone had heard from a friend who heard from a guy that heard from someone at his gun club that Tulammo was junk. Everything I've seen with my own eyes has been positive. I don't buy it because I'm collecting brass for eventual reloading.
