Question for Vets, how do y'all feel about civilians wearing military stuff?

I was never in the military. My son was in an anti-submarine squadron (AIRASRON-31) in the Navy back when they were flying S3A's. He gave me a couple of their unit patches. I've always hesitated to sew them on a garment because I didn't earn them. Just feels funny.

In the 1960's I wore the hell out of a Korean-War-vintage field jacket because it was practical and durable; but it had no unit patches or other insignia.

I wear a U.S. Army Veteran hat sometimes. I was in the Army '70-'76. I always get good stuff at the pow wows that my wife and I attend during the summer. It seems that the native Americans are fiercely patriotic.
I can just see me trying to get into a uniform that I wore when I was 19. I do have my fatigue belt and it is about 6" to short.
I don't think much about other people wearing military clothing. Don't really care I guess.
Peace,
Gordon

I lost all my uniforms, medals, DD-214, etc when the house burned to the ground.

At least that saves me the embarrassment of trying to fit into them....

Most sailors that I know had a hard time fitting into their boot camp issue at the end of their initial enlistment.............

Will be in Meadville the end of the month................and no, I don't fit in my old uniforms either.

The MA-1's are still available.

Yes they are thank-you, I had purchased a US wings Vietnam Replica jacket, that had the map and the whole nine yards. I was riding my neighbors Suzuki Haybusa when my little brother called and asked me to meet him at the airport. He is a Crop Scientist for Grow-mark and needed some aerial photos of some crop plots.

When he landed, I threw my helmet in the back seat, on top of his camera gear, with the coat on top of that, I jumped in the left seat, buckled up, fired it up, ran it up and launched. On take-off the left cabin door popped open, no biggie, so I climbed out to pattern altitude and popped my window open to try to close the door, which of course does not want to be closed, my brother popped his window open to begin the photo run, I continued to push my door out as far as I could and finally got it shut.

When we landed, I hopped out and grabbed my helmet, my little brother slid over to the left seat, did his run-op and departed. I walked out to the crotch rocket, and realized I had forgotten my jacket. I put on my helmet and had a cold ride home. I called my brother and asked him if he had my jacket?? NO, he hadn't seen it??? and the airplane was on a grass strip 30 minutes away.

Needless to say my jacket was never heard from again? but our crop pix were great.

Jackets and hats do not bother me, a wanna be wearing a coat with ribbons or awards he did not earn might let him find my inner person.

In the 60's, 70's and early 80's wearing a service winter coat was common by many, including anti war folks. After the service I wore my M-65 jacket for a long time, cutting wood, hunting and what ever. I still have the liners, they make light coats warmer. Both of mine, the raggedy work one and the like new one with the unit and E-6 patches went missing, son said ex sold them at a yard sale when I was out of town which was another nail in that coffin.

I lived close to a large active military base, field jackets were worn by many and lots of retirees never took off the patches and most of us wore Army camo for hunting. No patches, no army hat and not spit shined hunting boots.

If you need it, I just got new copies of mine in order to buy-back my military time for Federal retirement. There was a thread going on it recently.

BTW: Home Depot and Lowe's have 10% off Friday for Veteran's Day (We're buying all new bathroom fixtures, tile, etc).

"I can just see me trying to get into a uniform that I wore when I was 19. I do have my fatigue belt and it is about 6" to short."

ONLY 6"?

I wear a "Easter Rising 100 years 1916-2016" t-shirt that I wear and another that says "Dublin 1916". Saving them for St Paddy's Day, mostly.

I was in from 1984-1992. I still have ALL of my issued gear and dress uniforms. I'm like you, I can just see me trying to get into ANY of it! I'm only 30 lbs heavier since I wore any of it last in 92. :D

Most of these "Old Vets" still have a strong hand sake, just ask my arthritic hands.

That's the truth...yesterday in church, the pastor asked all the veterans to stand up and be recognized in honor of Veterans Day. There was an older gentleman in the row right behind me who was at least a Korean War veteran, if not a WWII vet. When the time came to "greet all the people around you", I made sure I shook his hand and thanked him for his service. The strength in his grip was surprising. I think I heard something in my hand pop when he squeezed it.

What about Halloween ? Give em a one day pass, and caramel apple. ??? What do you say ?? :D

J.F.

I did that in my 9th gade year--dressed up as a fat G.I--my dads WWI steeI pot, o.d. combat blouse, camo pants, cartridge belt, my dads binoculars and 2 WW 2 dummy grenades.
