Awhile back I acquired a 617-1 with S&W wood combat stocks. The Standard Catalog indicates synthetic stocks started with the -1 so I assumed these had been changed out by the previous owner even though he insisted they came with the gun when he bought it new in 1993. Noticed today a 617-1 for sale on an auction site and it too has wood combat stocks and the original box. The codes on the box label are Product Code 100566, Stock SB, Features CT-ST. So, square butt, combat target, stainless or does ST mean "synthetic?" Anybody know if early 617s may have shipped with wood combat stocks? Thanks.

Short answer. Yes, early Model 617's shipped with smooth combat wood grips with S&W medallions. In addition the product you cite (100566) shipped with smooth combat stocks.

100566 - 6" S CS SB CT ST FL
S = stainless
CS = Combat Stocks
SB = Square Butt
CT = Combat Trigger (this would be a 0.312" smooth combat trigger)
ST = Semi-Target Trigger (per S&W catalog but I suspect for this code means 0.375" semi-target hammer?)
FL = Full Underlug Barrel
