This is likely a stupid question, and some readers may roll their eyes. On the other hand, in my circles the prevailing view is that "the only stupid question is the one that's not asked." So here goes:

I'm interested in buying either a M34 or possibly a M63 with a 2" barrel. I know that the .22 lr case is short, but in the pictures of these guns that I've seen the ejector rod looks AWFULLY short. The question:

Has anyone ever had these guns fail to fully eject spent cases, especially as the chambers begin to foul during extended shooting sessions? If so, has the issue been significant enough to become really aggravating?

Thank you.

snowman,
I own & have owned "Many" of these 2" Barreled 22/32 Kit-Guns over the years & never had any problem whatsoever ejecting spent cases! These Revolvers are so much fun & inexpensive to shoot it's scary!! Now go find one!!

My Model 17 gumms up after about 10 reloads.

Simple problem with a simple solution.

I use the wooden platform of the range (as opposed to my soft hand :D), set the extractor rod and gently with firm pressure get them dislodged. I'll shoot it further, but generally retire the gun soon after.

I've thought about a quick cleaning, but if I'm paying for range time then I would rather move onto shooting something else. Too limited in space, lighting, noise... though at public outdoor ranges, I have done a quick cleaning.

I don't own the Models you are speaking of... though I'm beginning to shop for one. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but the extractor rod seems to be long enough for .22 casings.

It would not be a deciding factor in buying or selling a 34 or 63.

Never had a problem with ejection in either my M34 or M63.

My experience has been that chamber fouling in any .22LR -- revolver or auto -- can usually be addressed by changing ammo. Absolutely the worst stuff ever produced was Winchester T22.

Whenever I shoot my 22s I stick a nylon bore brush in my back pocket. If I start to notice difficulty with extraction I run the brush through each chamber once or twice. Problem solved.

Brand of ammo is the differance in ejection. I have a Mod.34-1 and a Mod. 317 with more than 10000 rounds. I like Federal Bulk, seems to be the cleanest to me. Brush also helps build-up after several rounds.

I went out last friday and put a 550 round brick of Winchester through my 2" M63. It shot great with zero binding issues. Extraction, however, did become sticky at about 200 rounds in...I swabbed out the chambers with a Q-tip soaked in CLP and it was good to go again. I had to give it the Q-tip treatment twice more over the course of the following 350 rounds. I found the 60 second 'fix' to help aid in ejecting was a non-issue to me and I've accepted it as just part of owning one of these nice little S&W Kit Guns. The ejector rod was plenty long enough to clear the empties and the little J-frame was a joy to shoot. It's great to be able to spend a couple hours shooting for less than $20!

I have 2 Models 34. A round butt and a square butt...here they are:

I have put more than 7000 rounds down range with the round butt...no issues with FTF, leading, ejector, etc. I probably clean it every 600 rounds or so. It builds up a bit of lead around the outside of the barrel, but that cleans off just fine.

The Model 34 snubbie is one of my favorites because I carry a J Frame .38 (36,37,38,40,42,49,438,442,638 and so on) It is great cheap practice. The feel and trigger pull are the same.

Thanks, guys. I would like to get one to review shooting fundamentals with. I carry a SP101 2-1/4", and would like a very similar .22 to practice with from time to time. Now if I can locate some money somewhere. . .
