In Pennsylvania the county sheriff issues concealed handgun permits. As long as you don't have any serious arrests you will be issued one. No training, no shooting. In the county of Philadelphia, you do have to go up to the police academy range and fire a few rounds. That is one of the reasons that Pa permits are not recognised by more states. A Pa permit is good for 5 years.
Under the federal law, for retired police (218) retired officers must quallify once a year. Its a 30 round course and is shot at 7 yds, 15 yds and 25 yds. If you want to carry a revolver you shoot the course with a revolver, and if you want to carry a semi auto you shoot the course with that style of weapon. You are not restricted to any one gun. That permit is only valid for one year.
