questions about 586 2.5 inch

have a chance to buy a very nice 586 with 2.5 inch barrel. cant find much info on this size. can anyone tell me what the original grips were for this model and how many years this size was produced. also what is a fair price on this gun. any additional info would be much appreciated also. thanks

That's a desirable gun. If "very nice" means LNIB then you probably looking at $1000 or close to it. We don't see these for sale much. The grips might have been the combat finger grooves. Maybe someone with one will post a picture of their's with original grips.

I agree with bamabiker. Those are pretty rare guns with that barrel length and if it is in good shape you will pay a premium for it unless you are lucky.

I picked this one up from another forum member a few months ago. I've seen a few of these over the years. All of them were wearing factory combat stocks. My guess is that it would bring $850-$1,200 depending on condition, box, papers, etc. Just my two cents.

The fourth edition of SCSW (p. 249) indicates S&W product code 103500. Mfg. 1993. It indicates blue finish (obviously) and red ramp front sight. Stocks are not mentioned. Mine is a -4. Not sure if there are other variations of the 2 1/2" 357 mag.

Product code 103497 appears to have been a special run of 2 1/2" 586s for export to Brazil. SCSW says these were .38 Special, not .357 Magnum.

I'm sure the experts here on the forum will post more detailed info.

I have one of these and a 3" 586 as well. They were a non-cataloged special order in 1994 only and came from the factory with Uncle Mike's rubber grips. Many owners changed the plain rubber grips to the beautiful wooden combats, but they did not ship with them.

Abby: They did indeed make a short run approx 300 of which 237 or 247 were sent to brazil. I had a NIB in 2002 SN # BRF3794, 38 special. Sold it for something that I did not need !!!!

it is a 586-4 in very nice shape. serial number is bpd60xx also has 034 stamped on it. the others i seen started with different letters. can anyone tell me if this is from the same batch also is possibly the 034 mean the 34 made

the others i have seen on here started with brf and they were supposedly made 1 year. i figured the serial numbers all had te same lettered prefix.

Of the 4 586's I had all had different prefixes and the brf prefix was on the 38 special. I hope that helps.

My 586-4 was NIB unfired with papers, tools, and box for $750 off GB in January. It came with Hogues. S/N BRF3xxx with 2-1/2" barrel. Recoil isn't bad and accuracy is very good.

Here's my contribution. 8 3/8", 6", 4 1/4" (Brazilian 38 Spl), 4", 2 1/2". I also have a 4" nickel finish that is on semi-perment loan to my MIL. The 686 was the first S&W I purchased after I retired from the Army and could begin to aquire handguns. The 586's are even better looking IMHO.

Matthew28, you can't go wrong with a 2 1/2". Depending on where you are in the country. I just paid $800 and argeed to drive 625 miles twice to secure the Brazilian model. The shorter barrels are at a premium so I'd say be prepared to shell out some serious $$$ for it (at least $800). Good luck. Remember you can't pay too much for a S&W, only too early.

P35Fan: I am in total awe of your 3" version. One more to add to my wish list. Do you know how many were made?

I was able to pick up 2.5" M586-4 BDP57xx in 2004 from Praco in Waco, Texas. It is the sweetest wheel gun I've owned. Came with wood combat grips installed and some loose Hogues. As I remember it was previously owned by a local police plain clothesman.
I'm looking for a 586 8 3/8 to go with my 6" with adjustable front, my 4" blue and 4" nickel.

Also I'm new to the board. Good folks here, that I can see.
