Well i have what i believe to be a model 10-5. My eyes have been playing tricks on me so it could be a 10-6. I have had this for a while and I was considering getting rid of it but i am not sure if it is a rare model or not. I say it is a 10-5 because that is what it looks like to me. Top of last number stamped is flat which leads me to believe it is a -5. I am reading through my Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd edition and looks like the 10-5 was only produced in1962. Does that sound right? It has a 5" tapered barrel as well. Case colored hammer and trigger. trigger is serrated. The blueing on the revolver seems to be in good condition but it was suffering from a bit of neglect when i got it. Someone stored it in a leather duty holster in their basement for years. it had some surface rust all over it and it left some pits and discolorations in it here and there. I cleaned it up as best I could. The revolver does not appear to have been shot much. Very minor turn line in the cylinder and no signs of wear in the cylinder stop grooves. I don't want to get rid of it and find out later it was a rare piece. The stocks are serialed to the revolver as well.

So I guess with all that said Does 1962 sound right for production? was it only for one year? SN is D3468XX If that helps answer anything.

And what is this thing realistically worth with the blemishes?

Thanks

If it is a 10-5 than it probably is'nt worth much with the wear, rust, and pitting you mention. The 10-5 did have a pencil (or tapered) barrel but I don't think it had a 5" long barrel. Mine (also a 10-5) had a 4" tapered barrel.
If you check Bud's Gun Shop, they have 10-?? for $269. Are police turn in's and don't look too bad.
As for the year I too would like to know the dates for the 10-5, maybe someone here can give that info. My S/N was D697XXX.

A lot of guys get confused by that 1962 date. That's when BOTH the 10-5 AND the 10-6 (heavy barrel) were introduced. The 10-5 (standard barrel) was made until 1977 when the 10-7 came out. Your gun was made around 1971.

A 5" 10-5 is not rare. Less common than the 4" version, but not rare. In the condition you describe I'd call it a $200-$250 gun.

Thanks for the response guys. So it would seem that it is just a run of the mill 5" pencil barreled model 10. Maybe i'll just keep it then since it doesn't seem to be worth much.

Good clean Model 10's in 5 and 6 inch variants are becoming harder to find. Especially with all of the goodies, box, paperwork, warranty cards ect.

There are tons of shooter grade 10's out there. At very resonable prices.

The 10's I have noticed over the last year are enjoying a comeback of sorts. More people are looking for nice examples.

One of my friends who has a small gun business, can't keep them in stock. Everyone of them sells and he has a list of customers looking for 90% + condition ones as he gets them.

Take that gun out and shoot it. You will be pleasantly surprised.
