Questions about PC 986 snub nose 9mm

I have two Titanium cylinder guns. A 327 Sc and 340 PD. I use only Rem Oil to clean with a towel and a bore snake.

Here it is. Not the best picture taker in the world.

Assuming it's one that'll be shown as a new model at SHOT that has already been released into the wild.

I have one on the way, more when I get it. My understanding is this was a very limited run, my guy cannot get anymore from any of his Distributors. There maybe be a version of this available in 2017, but for now this is supposedly it.

Thank you. As far as I can tell it has the same cylinder and coating as the longer barrel 986 except that it is unfluted.

Which cleaning products do you recommend using? I am normally a CLP, Hoppe's guy.

Pictures coming guys
Hoppe's no. 9 is safe for Titanium. You want to stay away from the front of the cylinder with anything stiffer than a nylon brush. I clean my 986's cylinder by wrapping the end of a finger with a micro-fiber towel and dipping it in a small amount of no.9. Rub gently until clean. Then wipe dry with a clean towel.

Or, just ignore the front face of cylinder all together. It will gather a nice patina with time.

Afternoon A.J.R.

Your new S&W 986 manual should have a small section about cleaning the 986.

My 986 manuals says that Ammoniated solvents or other strong alkaline solvents should not be used. Not much will hurt the actual titanium but the titanium cylinder has a special coating on it to prevent oxidation & reduce firing damage.

The MSDS for the Hoppe's No. 9 lists Ammonium Hydroxide, that tells us that Hoppe's is an Ammoniated solvent. I think it is also a strong alkaline but I haven't any data to confirm that.

There are some Hoppe's solvents that are safe (No. 9 isn't) but I usually just use CLP & a soft cloth (no metallic brushes or other abrasives.

In fact I don't do much with the front of the cylinder but a quick wipe off using CLP as it seems once the initial shooting discoloration happens it doesn't go any deeper or get any worse.

I am just ultra careful to not use ANYTHING that has a chance to remove the special coating on the titanium as once it is gone there is no way to re-apply it.

Excellent advice.

I appreciate the advice and information. I will read the instruction manual tonight. Regarding cleaning inside of the cylinder, is it ok to use the standard copper bore brushes or should special attention be paid as well?

I normally do not go too crazy about cleaning the cylinder face on any of my revolvers but ill pay special attention to this one.

I talked to a local dealer today. He called a distributor about these guns. The distributor, who by the way was sold out, said that these were built by S&W for Talo. He said they were a limited run and did not know how many were produced. He did not know if there would be another run or not. I am not able to verify the veracity of this information as it is basically third hand information.

I do have another dealer/distributor checking on it in an attempt to find out more information.

I can't decide if I actually will buy one of them IF I can locate one for purchase. Its a want not a need, that said, it is a neat and unusual revolver.

Morning A.J.R.;

Good question-- Personally I don't use copper/brass bore brushes on my 986's (I do though the barrel though). I just use a Glock nylon bore brush on my S&W titanium cylinders.

You might call S&W customer service to see what their take is on using a copper or brass bore brush on the S&W titanium cylinder.

Nice 986! I bought the 5" model. Hated loading and extracting the moon clips; discovered the BMT tool. It does the job. Encouraged me to buy the 929. Would like to have a 986 like yours.

Sadly, my 986 snub is stuck in Warrendale, PA, was supposed to be at my FFL today ! Colorado over Ohio to PA, then back to Ohio. No wonder USPS are always over budget !

They stink sometimes. Once they "rerouted" one of my incoming guns to Washington state, apparently because my FFL was located on Washington St., in Oklahoma. ?!? I can undertsand that. :p
