I've always liked the big stainless S&W autos of years ago.
I wondered into a LGS and saw a 4566 in their show case.

Two questions on this pistol, when were these made serial #TDM32XX?

The other question is about the functionality. With the hammer back in single action mode, I noticed a catch and an audible noise about half way through the trigger stroke. This was in the trigger pre-travel before hammer release.

Is this normal with this pistol or is there a problem?

Thanks

My trigger is smooth but my 4506 has the common "click" in the trigger. Has something to do with the spring that keeps the trigger from rattling or something like that. Does not affect function at all. The 4566 is a fantastic pistol and balances better that the full size 4506, IMO anyway.

The West Virginia State Police carried 4566's for many years, I believe - some are now showing up at LGS and on line, since they went to Glocks a little while back. Fine shooters, and yes the "click" is normal. I'm looking for one myself (at a reasonable price).

The "click" you're hearing is probably the trigger play spring.

You can do a search here in the Forums all about it.

The simple fix which will work for a while, is to push/bend it forward just a bit with something like a pencil with the eraser end doing the work. A much better solution is to just replace it. They have been improved and are solid instead of like a H.

Again a search here will show you how to do this. It is very easy, and parts are available. You'll need a new rivet also.

Everything will work fine without you doing anything. In fact I got a 4566 that had the trigger play spring removed. It was a Police trade in and it seems like that was a common thing to do. It's what the picture is after I put in a new spring

Doesn't affect function but annoys you to death.
... if you let it do that to you. ;)

I have so many 3rd Gens with the trigger play spring issue that I need to take a road trip someday down to see member BMCM and have him fix them all at once. :o

Until then, I have learned to not let the issue bother me. :)

Garsutt, I too had "trigger click" in my 4566, and when the temporary fix described above finally just quit working, I couldn't live with having a trigger issue on what is otherwise such a great handgun.

I suggest you buy the gun, ship it to BMCM (he has an FFL), and let him do the work to replace the spring. It's an easy job for someone as talented as he is, and while he has the gun apart, he will touch up the internals to give you a butter-smooth trigger. When you get the gun back, you will have a true keeper.

And if perchance you decide afterward that it's not your cup of tea, advertise it for sale on here, mention the work Bill did on it, and I am sure that it will sell quickly.

What did the LGS have this gun priced at?

$400 for any 4566 in decent condition is a steal. TDM prefix is usually an LE order gun. My old duty gun is TDM and decock only with spurless hammer. Several LE Special orders, locally, have TDM prefixes.

Great commander sized 45 that will run well and shoot accurately, with whatever you can stuff in the mag. Buy it. You will be glad you did. Regards 18DAI

If you send the slide to Trijicon, they will relamp the sights. IIRC they charge around $70 to do so.

I love my 4566. Carried it on the job for 10 years. Still carry it today at my part time job at the LGS. Thousands of rounds through it without a single malfunction. Ever. Not one. Regards 18DAI

Absolutely, run, don't walk back and get it if it's still there!

18DAI described this pistol perfectly. Decock only & spurless hammer. Had night sights but probably long dead.

Also comes with 3 magazines, according to the tag.

Guess I'll have to go take another look.

Thanks guys.

Hope you do more than look! For $400 I would likely injure myself getting at my wallet.

Got back to the store, (pawn shop) Asked to look at pistol then demonstrated the issue with the trigger play spring and mentioned the dead night sights. Sales associate states that they are loosing money on everything in that case and that the price is the price. I told him that I doubted that they were loosing money on that item. He then stated that it didn't make any difference, and further indicated that there would be NO negotiation.

Having worked at gun shops and we did Pawn as well, I know how the game is played. I'd be surprised if they paid the previous owner $200.

Needless to say my money and I walked.

I found this one by accident I'm sure I'll run across another. I always have more "WANTS" than money anyway.

They were asking $400. Didn't think that was too outrageous.

Obviously that thought changed.

I like it when they'll bargain with you too, & I always ask for a lower price even if it's a good price to start with (don't want them to think I'm too excited about it), but I wouldn't walk away if they didn't.
