Please help!! Local shop is holding a gun for me and I have 5 days to act on it! Good shape 6906 with square trigger guard and basic sights. Ser# is TCA 13XX so I think it is an early model, comes with box and 2 mags. Price is $324.99. Should I get it? What year of production. Always wanted one, and this seemed reasonable, but I only have 5 days. Thanks Rick

That's not a bad price. Summit is $289, but that is only one mag plus shipping. Not sure about whether Summit's gun comes with a box. Add the additional mag and subtract the shipping and transfer fees and I bet it is about a wash.

thanks guys, was thinking about shipping and trans fee it would be about a wash. Gun is in really good shape and was wondering if it is a good gun to have. Thanks again Rick

I hope so. I ordered one. My guess is they are very good guns, but they are not "hot" or in vogue. Different strokes for different folks. Some want something lighter. Some want something thinner. Some want something with more capacity (although you can use an extended magazine). Some object to the 9mm caliber. Some object to a DA/SA trigger. All that being said I really haven't heard anyone say the 6906 is a bad pistol and many seem to love it. I suspect S&W sold a ton of them in their day. I guess I'll see how I feel about it in a few days when I take delivery.

You'll like it. I bought one when I went to Narcotics and carried it daily. I then got a .45 4563, but went back to the 6906 because it was the perfect size and weight for a concealable handgun.

Hey, "plastic" is in.. But I'm 66 years old and I've HAD "plastic". I HAVE steel...

Most young first time gun buyers are not even aware the fine 3rd generation line of pistols exist.. The auto mags never show or mention them, as plastic is the fad now. The retail prices of these pistols was pretty high (my LS listed for I think around $830), and you can buy plastic guns all day long for $500.. No incentive for a new buyer, lacking knowledge in the finer aspects of the Smiths, to even consider them. In fact now that they have been discontinued they will be harder to find, betcha the prices start creeping up on the real good ones.

For me personally, I'm a big fan of the TDA platform as I think it's safer for the average non-leo pistol owner. I think the heavier DA first round offers less chance for the AD/ND.. Thanks to continuing development of the dedicated 9mm self defense round I consider the 9mm sufficient for personal defense, but best of all the 3rd generation line of Smiths, all across the board, are absolutely RELIABLE.

And RELIABILITY is JOB ONE in a self defense weapon.

I've bought a NIB 5906/6906/3913LS/CS9/CS45 in the past few months because I wanted to get them while they are still available at reasonable prices.

But, try and think of it in this way.. It's generally acknowledged that the 3913 (or 3913LS) is one of the finest 3rd generation Smith pistols ever made..

The 6906 is simply a double-stack 3913...

The trade off comparing the single stack 3913 and the double-stack 6906 is basically you are giving up a bit of "thin" to increase your capacity a minimum of almost 50%, and a maximum of almost 100%.. You go from standard capacity of 8+1 to a standard capacity of 12+1, with the option of using the 15rd. 5906 mags (using the S&W +2 grip extender). I actually prefer the "feel" of the 6906 w/the 5906 mags w/extender..

It's confusing to me that they call it the S&W +2 grip extender when it actually should be the +3 grip extender.

You still get the fantastic reliability, and other qualities of the slimmer 3913, but hey, more rounds to send down range...

I have the 3913/3913LS and the 6906 and I like all of them.

You won't be unhappy.. The 3rd generation line of S&W pistols are great.

Best Wishes,

Jesse

P.S. Photos below show the 6906 w/standard 12rd mag and 6906 w/5906 mag w/+2 extender.

PX15 has said about as well as can be. Get one or more quickly and you'll understand why we love em!
They are THAT good......

I recently rediscovered the beauty and utility of the Smith third gen autos with special attention to the 3913 and 6906 models in the series. They are great shooters and great for concealment all year round. This is from a Glock and Sig person.

Okay, today I picked up the 6906 I purchased from Summit. The internals looked good and the pistol shot very well. It shows quite a bit of holster wear, and I think the grips are a little slick. It has obviously been carried quite a bit and hasn't been babied. Probably not fair to expect more for $289. So now the dilemma … do I live with the aesthetic imperfections and use it as a beater, pay to have the pistol coated, or sell it to finance the purchase of a LNIB?

tocohillsguy,

If you are going to carry the gun just make sure it is reliable and stick it in a holster. Carry guns are going to get wear and if you get a good deal on a gun and it already has some wear than a few additional scratches that you will put on it will not matter.

I bought an old and somewhat abused 640 revolver about 5 years ago. I have carried it and added some scars of my own. It is reliable and the wear marks just add character.
