R.I.P. Rimfire?

my big concern is the cost of .357 ..... eeeeek! shudder...wow...$30 for 50 rounds

WalMart is getting some. Every time I go (time of day does not matter) there's 4-6 guys in the fishing tackle aisle (unobstructed view of the counter) "looking at stuff." As soon as the $25 bricks come in they clean them out to put on Craigslist or their table at the gunshow. They started marking them $100, then $85, $70, 60 and last show Jul 4th pretty much $50/ brick. And not many $50 bricks moving. Soon it won't be "profitable" to put in the time required to make this hustle. Then we'll get back to "normal." Joe

In my safe resides a cap lock 12 ga with rudimentary sites and a rifled bore.
It's not a replica. It is a long arm from the era when it was the bleeding edge of firearms technology.
It did not vanish, and I don't have to re aquire it if the spirit moves me to dump a charge of black down that long dark pipe, shove a wad and shot down after it fit a cap and let the Thunder roll.

Likewise, those millions of 22s made since it's invention, will remain, just like the heirloom entrusted to me by my grandfather.
They will not starve to death, though they may be hungry for now.
Many who build the rifles, also load the ammo.
They know of the demand. At worst, they will reduce production of the guns till the ammo catches up.
It's their best selling caliber. So much so, they can't keep up.
Why axe something so successful as the 22?
it just won't happen.

If you do a web search with one of the various ammo search services, you will find plenty of 22LR out there. It isn't all $0.10 per round, but it's there.

Just because your local Walmart doesn't have it doesn't mean it isn't available.

I may have trouble finding 22s, but 45s, 38, 380, etc, etc; no problem. I handload, and cast my own bullets; I haven't run out of centerfire ammo for quite a while.

Don't know what planet you all are from, 22lr can be had at all LGS,Dicks sporting goods and walmart in upstate NY.

But this is the slow part of the year I'm told but I still can't find a Henry Golden Boy in 22mag or a Ruger MKIII in any configuration.

Henry got behind when they were hit by Sandy. Maybe they are still not caught up? I think I saw the GB 22mag at Benton Shooters in Benton, TN a couple weeks ago.

Ruger threaded barrel models can be tough to find around here (suppressors are becoming more and more popular). Buds gun shop has a wide selection of Rugers including a couple threaded barrel. I wonder how much Internet sales are impacting availability at retail stores?

I see the black rifle replicas piling up around here.

I'm thinking of adding a blackgun 22 to the collection but I need to add a few more real blackguns first. You know what happens when you give something to one grandchild the others want one too so I need 3 more AR's. Granny somehow became an easy touch when the grandbabies came along. Still trying to figure that out.

At some point an ammo manufacturer is going to have to open up a new plant to keep up with the demand. Even after the craze dies down there are still going to be scads of new guns out there that need the ammo and it's going to be hard to feed them. Maybe this started as a scare but it was already a little thin before then. Add to that the new rimfire sporting events and it just means the search for ammo will stay harder to deal with for even longer.

And while I agree with that it's more a matter of availability with ease to me. I want to not even break open the stash stock and instead just roll out to the store ang pick up a fresh brick or two and spend a lazy day at the range. But you just can't to that anymore. Haven't been able to do that for a couple of years now. My worry is if you want to keep shooting rimfire ammo then this is now the new normal of having to special order it all the time.

Rimfire was getting more and more difficult to find before the panic. This was because of the exploding interest in all the new rimfire replicas, particularly black rifles with 30rd mags dangling underneath.

No. Increasing popularity and demand are not usually considered a death knell for a sport or associated products. That said, I think there is a lull in gun sales due to the overwhelming demand during the panic and market saturation.

This...

Right before the 2012 Pres election... I bought a bunch of CCI mini-mags. Since I shoot 22LR frequently, I'm always on the lookout for it.

Early one Tuesday morning ('bout 7am), I was gettin' ready for a campin' trip... and went to Wally Weird to get a lantern. Back in sportin' goods... there was several older gentlemen just standin' round.... lookin' like they was waitin' on something. Whilst at the check-out in SG... the attendant tole me that they was waitin' on shipments of ammo to buy up. That's why our local WW never has no 22LR.

My 22 hasn't been fired in years due to no ammo to shoot it with.

Sure, I can get some at 30¢ a round but for that price, I'll stick with the .357 Mag and the 9mm.

Our Walmart gets one or two packages a month. They get it but unless you are standing there when they put it on the shelf, you're not going to get any. The local gun shows never have it. I suppose mail order is possible.

You were smart to buy cases.

I had been buying by the case well before the panic came along. Not a matter of great vision of bad times ahead or anything like that, just a mater of economics. I do the same with food and most other consumable items.

Having ample supply of XYZ allows me to wait for sales and discounts to come along to replenish at favorable prices. Unless someone has severe budget constraints, it doesn't make sense to me to be running out of everything on a weekly basis and be at the mercy of whatever price and availability is at the moment I run out of XYZ. Works for me.

There is no shortage, ask any gun owner how many rounds of .22 they have stashed, and you will know right where the ammo went...

On the way home from the range today I stopped by my local guns store. They had 500 round boxes of Remington .22LR for $32.50. I bought 2 boxes (there was no limit) and there was still an ample supply left on the shelf. Different story at our local Wally World...haven't seen any there in months.

Powder is another story...can't find any Bullseye pistol powder anywhere.......

For all of those who are convinced that their Walmart hasn't had any ammo in months, years, eons, etc... go to brassbadger.com, put in your postal code. It will show you what is in stock, and has been in stock recently but is now sold out at your local walmart stores.
