R. LEE ERMEY

I don't think R.Lee was a gunnery sergeant when he left the corps. He was actually a supply sergeant in Viet Nam. He was given the rank of honorary Gunnery Sergeant after he left the beloved corps. He has done much to help the Marine Corps and deserves the honor of being called "Gunny". He should have gotten the Academy Award for Full Metal Jacket. He has made a career out of it and he's a great guy.
I am not a Marine but was raised by one.

He was a Staff Sergeant when he was given a medical discharge. If I remember correctly, he had an air winger MOS. He was also a Drill Instructor...Gunnery Sgt. Hartman of Full Metal Jacket WAS S/Sgt R.L. Ermey as a DI. His actions call attention to the Corps in a positive and honorable light. That is why he was given the rank of Gunnery Sergeant by the Commandant.

IMHO he's paid his dues long ago and more than rates his rank.

BTW I'M not a big fan of the Glock (doesn't give me a comfortable feel) OR the Colt M1911A1. I AM a fan of the Browning High Power, which is not entirely dissimilar to a 1911 and can call my shots with it at reasonable combat/defense ranges...and it fits my hand like a glove!

I like Gunny, and I like Glocks.

I also like 1911s and S&Ws. And Winchesters, and young women, old whiskey, good cigars........etc

This would be very close to my opinion as well. I prefer wine over whiskey and my wife would prefer me leaving the young women alone though.

He is an actor. By definition, one who has sincerity to rent.

Kinda like a hooker.

No, I take that back.

Exactly like a hooker.

No not exactly, hookers may be considered somewhat sleazy. But unlike "spokepersons" most are not really dishonest.

I like the Gunny, he reminds me of the BMC that was my company commander in basic training circa 1970 .......
And here's my commentary on Glocks (courtesy of the M1911 Pistols site)........

I've had the pleasure of meeting Lee twice at CMP shooting events.

Whether he likes Glocks or not, I know he likes his M1 Garand, and can shoot it quite well!

He told me the story of becoming an actor, and how he appreciates it turning into a life long career. In acting, that's a rather rare accomplishment.

He is a gentleman that seems more aware of the way he is associated with the Marines Corps than the commercial contracts he's engaged in. He took time to talk with everyone that walked up to him at these events, and especially spent time with the children that were there. He understands what it means to be a role model.

He also took the time to send a special video greeting to the Young Marines unit that meets at our gun club.

So - thank you Lee for all you do! Semper Fi!

Marc
