Rabbit hunting on snow shoes

I used snow shoes years ago, they are not good in areas with thick brush.

Heck YES. I hunt bunnies on show shoes. With a pistol too. I don't know what the name of these are. wider than trappers but nice long tails so I could run if I wanted to. Now that I am a little more mature I don't run because I don't like to fall on my face in the cold snow. I am from tug hill. If you wanted to hunt there it was snowshoes or don't hunt.

I like them because I can jump on brush piles with out getting stuck in them. When hunting with a dog, they want to walk on the back.

I had an old fella on Tug Hill teach me how to tie them on with clothesline. Its far better than any leather harness. the cotton does not stretch or need to be re tightened like leather.
I used a Colt Challenger 22 semi auto from the fifties most of the time. Sometimes I would even get a rabbit. I have shot a couple with a 1911A1. Never tried it with a revolver. Now I just go with out a gun. I don't care for rabbits anyhow. I f I don't eat them, I will not shoot them. I have hunted grouse on show shoes using a 222 over 20 gauge. My favorite long gun. Its my meat gun. When I do that, I pack a subcompact 22 for that last shot when needed. I also have a 22 over 410 for squirrels and rabbits.

I have been out quite a few times this year. The Iroquois wild life refuge is behind my house.

Hunted rabbits/hares with my beagles for many years with and without snowshoes depending on the conditions. Never was a problem either way. When I was a teenager, I hunted them with my bow and arrow. Always looked for a hill facing South as they would be sitting still warming themselves in the sun. Made for an easy shot.

Alaskan 13 X 60's, never tried poles, Ruger semiauto 22 pistol. Shoes are wood frame with neoprene webbing...lots of flotation and a good high front rise, but tricky in the brush. Trick is to work quietly and catch 'em sitting for a head shot with the .22. You can keep the gun holstered till you need it - your hand stays much warmer.
