Went out to the excellent Triple N range this morning. Uneventful drive until I hit the access road. Clicked the cruise control at 25 for the 3 miles and just enjoyed the scenery. Until this giant black rhino-pig dashed out in front of my truck at maybe 50 ft. Lit up my tires and watched "Pops" run back through the wire to the family, looked like a sow and 3 or 4 piglets. Told the story at the "pro shop" and none of them ever seen one. Out to the pistol range; since I hurt my back a few weeks back I didn't want to push it. Plus, some 'ol boy was shooting something big like a .458 Win by the report. I put 200 rds of 30 year old CCI Mini-Mags through my Ruger, nary a burp or bobble. I guess QC was better when the insert in the 100 rd Plastic box was black. Had KMart price tags on 'em marked $3.43. 50 rds through the 15-3, what a fine machine for a 50+ y/o example. And another flawless 110 rds through the CZ P07. 90% FMJ, 10% Federal HST. The trigger is getting better and the new mag performed as expected. Funny how 2 full boxes and 10 add'l rds is just about 2 loads with 17 rd mags. 360 total rds, zero malfunctions. That's the good.
The bad: My back was killing me, could not get comfortable. Added to short breath and I was a mess. Should have set my targets at 7 yds instead of 50 ft. Everybody who showed up at 10:30 and after did just that. I guess I should be happy my targets were the same at 50 as the other folks were at 21. It was nice to see the RSO (a wheelchair bound kid) giving a lesson and coaching 2 older women who must have been there for the first time.
By around 11:15 (I had the range to myself from 9:15-10:30) a crowd had formed on the firing line, exceeding my "comfort level." I cruised out slow looking for the "bacon brigade." No luck. I wonder if they were enjoying this spectacular weather as much as me. Joe
