Range Question

I live in Maryland, north of Baltimore. Does anyone know of a Range within, say, 3-4 hour drive where you can rent and shoot an M1 Garand? My Dad carried an M1 in WWII and have always wanted to shoot one but never had the opportunity.

You are very unlikely to find a range anywhere having an M1 available for rental. You'll have to make some new friends who own M1s. Or buy one yourself. Some competitive shooters still use M1s in service rifle matches.

Finally got hold of my shooting friend on the Eastern Shore. He sold the Garand as he never shot it. Kept his 30 carbine though. But I have a back up plan..Another fellow near Chestertown does still have his. He is traveling in the Northeast right now I think

See if you can contact someone with the York Riflemen club in York, PA. I know they have high-power shoots regularly and someone would probably love to take a vet to the range to shoot his M1. Be sure to bring water and soft drinks and enough lunch for a few people.

I can't help you directly but the rifle club I belong to has a number of firearms available for use by its members. Among those available is a match quality M1 Garand. You would come down to the club and as my guest for the day be allowed to fire the M1. We would need to bring the ammunition and be required to clean the rifle when we were through, I'm familiar with the M1 so there should be no problems.

I don't even have a Garand, but if you come to Charleston I have a 30-06 rifle, a third gen 9mm Smith, a 686, a Keltec 9mm and Browning A5 shotgun and I would be very glad to shoot with you at either our indoor range, or take a ride out to the National Forest for some outdoor fun. I also load a smorgasbord of ammo for all of them from bunny poots to big game rounds.

I am in California and have shot NRA across the course rifle matches at a couple of ranges that owned several Garands they got thru the DCM program. They made these rifles available to shooters that did not own a suitable rifle to participate in the match. If I was you I would search for information on matches in your area to see if any of them have Garands available for loan to shoot matches. I have to warn you though that shooting rifle matches is a lot of fun and is addictive and can be quite expensive.

I wish I could help, but I am too far away. The first high powered rifle I ever fired was an M1 while I was in college ROTC in the early 1960's. At ROTC summer camp, we fired the M1 a lot and qualified with them. I was very impressed with the accuracy and reliability. Later, on active duty, I fired and qualified with the M14 and M16, but was not impressed by either. After I retired, I had a chance to trade for an M1, and did so. It is a refurbished rifle that came out of the DCM, and shoots just as well as I remembered. The recoil is a lot more bearable than any of the .30-06 hunting rifles I have owned.
