Well even though it was very foggy I had to itch my finger so I grabbed a buddy and a value pack and hit the range.
To my suprise there was almost no open lanes there was maybe 50 people or more, I have never seen so many but we took a spot next to a father-son-uncle team that had a few rifles out on the bench.
I left my paper at home because being so foggy I knew I wasn't going to be shooting 100 yards, let alone 50. We tossed out some steel and got to work.
We did some 2x2x2 drills with the 4x on it at 35 yards and I am just as happy with the scopes close range capability as I am with it out 200 or more yards. The wide field of view really helps with target acquisition. I did have my first few failure to hold opens happen but other than that the gun ran flawlessly.
To my suprise the small 'view window' (for lack of a better term) that I was complaining about has actually made me keep both eyes open and my head firmly welded to the stock. After a couple hundred rounds I could snap it right up from rest and start drilling steel.
I am also glad I got my hands on some CLP finally and had my brother (ex army) walk me through as gave it a thourough cleaning. It was so wet out my muzzle and fore grip were dripping wet, my mags were soaking wet as well as the magwell. In short it was AWESOME, not one hicup. My buddy picked it up and shot a 3 round group into an orange at 35 yards before i even got out of the truck, and that was his first with this gun.
After about 30 minutes the father from the lane next to us came down with a hungarian .308, I can't remember the make but it was a wwII bolt action, pretty smooth considering he said he paid $25 for it. Really smooth trigger, nothing but iron sights and a bayonet
He of course was interested in my steel and what his surplus military ball would do to it. Since I get it for free and he was insitent on us having some shots as well we went ahead and made swiss cheese of the four pieces I had.
Fun fun fun. I got home and found much less grit in the lower then normal, not sure if it was just because it was wet outside or if the CLP is less sticky then the Lucas but I like the CLP way more already. easy cleanup, one bottle one brush and your good to go. I lost my stock tube cap though and now have no place to hide my bore snake, todays project is a billet cap with o-ring to keep it in
As for the new 4x scope I am giving it high marks now that I am used to it, my buddy who shoots large caliber usually remarked imediatly at how clear the glass is and how bright the crosshairs are. I also played with the lighted reticle and found that on it's lowest setting on green it just barely tints the reticle and lets you find it very quick when shouldering the weapon. so I guess i will have a use for it after all.
This week should be the first it is light enough to shoot after I get off work and hopefully will be clear so I can get some paper up and see just how tight she is.
