Shooting at paper is fine for grouping, but it gets boring, IMO. I prefer "reactive" targets, and use empty 20 oz plastic soda bottles, short chunks of 2x4, and claybirds propped up against said chunks of 2X4 or propped up with empty shotgun hulls. For handgun hunting, I set these out on the 25 yd berm, or under the 25 yd target stands.
When I hit the bottles, 2x4s, or the claybirds, I get an immediate visual confirmation that the target's been hit. I have a lot of fun "chasing" the empty bottles around, hitting them again and again where they land.
For rifles, I set out the 20 oz bottles at 100 yds and 2 ltr bottles at 200-300 yds, and claybirds propped up on edge at 100 and 200 yds.
Sometimes, I'll just pick out a spot on the 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, 400 or 600 yd berms and use that for a target. The dust puffs tell me how I'm doing. The only drawback to this system is having to wait for the "shoot three shots, walk 200 yds" crowd calling for a safe range every five minutes so they can check targets and tape up bullet holes, etc.
Of course, I collect the plastic bottles before leaving.
