Very nice 27-2. From the two pics I see, would rate it at 98%. Value at $1000 give or take, depending on buyer motivation. Just my 2 cents.

It almost looks too good to be a factory finish from 1978-80. Has the quality of a Fords' master grade bluing job. Could it be refinished by Fords?

The stocks are a little plain Jane and look utilitarian compared to the spectacular metal finish. Need a set with more grain and color like these:

Or these...

You gun does look awesome! I had to look at the first pic for awhile to determine what those wavy lines are (reflections of the wood grain). Anyway, I agree with the above, the stocks are very plain for a 27-2. Most of the ones I see from the period are more colorful and grained. Looking forward to the "rest of the story".

Have to agree with SP as I was thinking the same thing, looks almost too nice to be original but the pics are blurry and lighting can change the actual color so hard to tell but I would expect it to have a softer blueing where your pics almost look like black chrome and while some S&W's from the 1930's and 1950's are very high polish and very dark,
Your 27-2 is probably very late 70 production which are usually a lighter blue unless some sort of special order or refinished.

Finish looks nice, but possibly refinished and polished. Stocks are nothing special. The 4" barrel makes it a little unusual. $1K , maybe more if the gun is all original.

The Rest of The Story

If this was a test you passed with flying colors, especially you SaxonPig. Found this in a sporting good store for cheap and although mechanically sound it's finish looked as though it had spent at least 25 years in a automotive glove box with a bunch of loose marbles. Horrible finish with small pits of rust (yes I have before and after pictures). Anyways I had nothing to loose but just under $400 dollars and 3 months and two weeks later Ford's made it new. I know some collectors are turned off by a refinish but it works for me and have no plans of selling. I have less then $700 in total. The grips are just something from a local gun show and hope to find some better grips in the future. I am amazed at the members here on the fourm and all your knowledge, it is a honor and joy to interact with all of you. Thank you

I may be in the minority on this forum, but I see no problem in refinishing a badly worn, relatively common gun if the refinisher is a quality guy. Folks will say, "It ruins the COLLECTOR value!" Well, collectors don't collect worn examples of common guns, so if you like it, and don't expect to get your money back out of it, no reason not to.

Ford's did a great job on that gun.

You did good. Great actually.

I have a 3.5" 27-2 that I just sent back to Smith & Wesson......again. The refinish I got back from them wasn't as good as I expected, so I sent it back. Had some hazed areas that looked like they hadn't been buffed out or something. Hoping the second time around they get it right.

Hi kframs4me,

I was Web surfing when I checked out this site. I clicked on your topic. I saw your beautiful Model 27-2. So I decided to join. I won't disparage another man's gun. But I will compliment a man's gun. In my opinion, the Model 27-2 is the best and most beautiful revolver ever manufactured. Yours is gorgeous.

I want one just like yours. I've fired many .357 handguns. Most would shoot .38 Special rounds very accurately. None shot .357 Mag rounds as accurately and smoothly as a Model 27-2. And I think the a 4" barrel is optimum.

From what I understand, a Model 27-2 is worth its weight in diamonds. So I'd settle for a 4" version. But my expectation is those with them won't sell them.

I do think that the Python is a beautiful gun. But the Model 27-2 was superbly manufactured with deep, rich bluing. And I prefer blued handguns.

Congratulations on your gun. I know it'll provide you with years of fun and flawless performance. And with 180 grain bullets of good construction, a .357 Mag is more than sufficient for big game hunting. I'd even use one on black bear.

I had the same exact thing with same exact gun. First time around looked like they gave it to a high school shop class kid. It came back with more scratches than they received it with.

Sent it back and second time was a beautiful job, looked better than it probably was when new. Good luck with yours. Now when refinishing one I send it to Fords. Done right the first time.
