Rattle in magazine

This may seem like an incidental question, but, I have both the SD9mm and the SD40 (which I just purchased today). In loading the magazines for the 40 there is a distinctive rattle when it approaches full capacity. Does not rattle when empty. Neither of the magazines for the SD9 make any noise but very evident and pronounced in the 40. Is this a matter of importance? Or how might I eliminate the rattle? Have not fired the weapon as yet but could this affect operation and feed?

take a small screw driver and push down on the bullets through the slide lock hole to re-seat the bullets.

I had an FNP9 that did the same thing. IF you fully load the magazine then "hit" the floorplate against the palm of your hand (BEFORE inserting it in the pistol!) it will reseat the rounds and reduce (usually eliminate) the rattle for that loading.

This is common with many brands and calibers of double column magazines. Sometimes slapping the magazine, baseplate down, against the palm of a hand or table top will stop the rattle, sometimes it won't.

However, what is universal is that you won't be able to move your hips fast enough to make that rattle noticeable at a normal walking pace, so you really don't need to worry about it if you are carrying concealed. Something else that is universal is that you and nobody else will be able to hear that rattle when you are shooting it at a range.

BTW, the above is a hint that this is not anything to get bothered by or worry about. So just ignore it.

I've found with slapping the floorplate AND the back side of some of my FS M&P40 mags the rattling goes away. The rattle is there with the mags of the Sigma 40 I used to own, my FS M&P40 & 40C. Some will rattle only when fully loaded, others when nearly full.

its a common double stack issue, my glocks did it, my SD does it, my ruger did it.

download one round and it should stop.

This.

What I do is slap the backside of the mag (primer side) into my palm 2-3 times while I load a mag and I've not any rattlemags since. Its reflexive now, don't even think about it.

My only complaint with the SD40VE is the magazine rattle. Other than that this pistol is a gem. I wish someone made an aftermarket mag that did not rattle. I'd buy three or four. My son was getting ready to buy an SD40VE. I told him about the mag rattle and steered him to the SD9VE.

After I load my mag, I will hold it upside down and press down on the tip of the exposed round 4 to 5 times and it eliminates all rattle. Let me know if this works for u guys!

Most guns I've owned had mags that rattle.no problems with them.ive found that as long as I keep my gun clean(I'm anal,1 round or 1000 rounds I clean)I have 0 issues.only gun I have that isn't that reliable is my Mossberg Plinkster.

Sd40ve rattle

I see where people say the rattle is because of double stack magazines.. Not true, I have Ruger and Springfield Armory guns that are double stack mags and they don't rattle at all. It is a Smith and Wesson problem not a double stack mag problem. You would think after all this time S&W would have figured it out, or do they just not care?

I received an e mail from Smith and Wesson today they tell me when the magazines get broke in from use they will stop rattling. I have yet to see where anyone on here reports that they have stopped rattling. Absolutely the worst customer service. Everyone complains but they don't seem to care. It speaks volumes to me. You live and learn, lesson learned.

When you walk down the street just sing that old Big Joe Turner song,
" I said, You gotta shake , rattle and roll...shake rattle and roll
Shake , rattle and roll ...shake rattle and roll ...
Well , you wont do right to save you're doggone soul "

Nobody will hear the rattle .

Actually the rattle in the mag comes from something not under spring tension...hence the rattle . Keep adjusting the rounds until everything gets pressed in place . A cleaning and lubing of the inside parts helps also .

Disassemble the magazines. Spray everything with CRC silicone. Wipe it all off with a rag. Reassemble the magazines. Repeat often as needed. In a match on a rainy/muddy day, that could be rather often. (Have shot matches that had buckets of water on every stage to rinse out dropped magazines.)
I habitually slap the primer side of magazines to insure seating.
My magazines are reliable and don't rattle after the first few uses, if ever. Too bad the matches have shut down; sounds like you might enjoy learning about your gun.;)

Some mags just seem to do it, and all the "fixes"
don't do a darn thing.

I am very familiar with firearms being in law enforcement for 36 years and ex military. Like I said I have Springfields and Ruger double stacks and I have zero issues with them. It is only with my Smith and Wesson SD 40 VE. I was always told not to lube the insides of the magazines but I can try that, I just don't think thats the issue as I said I don't have it with my other makes of handguns

Off the top of my head, I have Glock magazines that rattle, Wilson 1911 magazines that rattle, and maybe M&P magazines that rattle.

No biggie.
