Re-finished 629-1

Recently bought a shooter grade 629-1 from a forum member to use as a woods gun to throw in the truck and haul around on the 4-wheeler. Had it Ceracoted on a whim since nearly all of my guns are dead stock from the factory. Local guy did it for $85. Sniper Gray/Graphite Black. Turned out pretty good,IMO.

I agree that is a good looking gun. I too would be interested in hearing more about the toughness of a Cerakote finish. I know people use them, but I have never seen a Cerakoted gun in person and have no idea how it stands up compared to an old-style factory blue or Parkerized finish.

To each his own. I like my 629 just the way it came from the factory. Nice and shiny. If I want a blue finish I turn to my 29.

Kind of puzzled why you would have refinished a stainless gun. Nothing really more durable than stainless. Putting a finish on top of stainless I would imagine would be less durable than the base stainless.

It always amuses me when people want to know "WHY" somebody does something like this. Because I WANTED to. It's MINE! Isn't that reason enough? I probably have five or six pre-29's and 29's that I can "turn to" if I want. I wanted a woods gun with which I will somtimes hunt. Don't want to mess up a 98% blue or nickel gun lugging it around in the swamp!
As to the wearability of the Ceracote,it's TOUGH! Won't show all of the spiderwebbing and scuffs that a stainless gun will show. This one was plenty scratched and scuffed when I got it.
And as to re-sale,I've been offered $700 for it already and I've only got $560 in it as it sits. So,y'all do what you want with yours and I'll do what I want with mine,thank you very much!

I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, but if you dont like stainless, why did you buy it? Really good deal or couldnt find a model 29? Around here the 629's are more rare than 29's and cheaper.

I'm not criticizing you, just trying to understand the thought process at work here. I can definitely see it if you got a really good deal or something.

Just my personal opinion, but the new coating looks great
for outdoor/field work. Not much danger of rusting, and no shine.
The blue 29 doesn't have the inherent protection of stainless.
I will be looking forward to durability reports on Ceracoat.
I had a stainless gun hot-blued with the new method for SS guns,
just to avoid the shiny, "here-I-am" looks of a stainless item.
In my case, it was because that firearm doesn't come in blue.

What part of HE HAS 560 IN IT AS IS, did you not get?

I'm sure if you have a 29 to send him for 475 maybe he will humor you and carry a blue gun if that's what YOU would like.......

Black spray paint? LOL No tape around I guess. Then again, to each their own. 99% of the revolvers we discuss here everyday S&W made plenty of them. It's yours, do what you want.

fat tom, Thanks for posting this because it gives me an idea.
I have a S&W 1917 that someone (before me!) used a wire wheel to remove some surface rust on the frame. There's not much damage but it looks scatchy and the "flaming bomb" ordnance symbol has been completelly buffed off. There is no collector value to this piece now, just shooting value, so maybe a recrowning and Ceracoating would be in order. The 1917s were originally blued but lot got parkerized for WWII service, so dull greyish finish would be fitting, I think.
By the way, your 629 looks great!
