Well once again I turn to the experts.. ( I'm sure one will show up :D ) I just acquired a mint, if not unfired Model 29-2 4" with the correct blue box, outer packing box, and presentation case, unfortunatly the lining of the case is gone.. stripped clean.. someone had placed a piece of blue felt in the box but that's all..
The plastic is in perfect shape now all I need is to find someone who can restore the blue lining.. top and bottom including the lift out piece that covers the tools..
I'm pretty handy but really not sure I want to tackle this as a first time project..
Anyone here do this sort of thing??
If so shoot me an email and we will talk..
Thanks for the help in advance

I copied this from the forum many years ago. Verbatim, with some spelling errors corrected....

OK! Here is the scoop on those S&W plastic liners, In the old Pres. Cases! Guys pass this on and I will tell the secret. But I have to kill all of you! HA HA!

About the liners! If the plastic is still in good shape, I blow them off with air, gently brush off all I can get off and it does come off real easy with the air pressure. Then I use Their Colored spray adhesive (Blue For S&W's) and use this stuff they call Suede Tex and their Mini Flocker applicator. I do about 5-10 a month, for my buddies and Buy up all the old S&W Pres. boxes I can find. People even give me a lot of the boxes, because they HATE the shedding, I can buy and restore them and they bring real good money. I buff the outside with Johnson's paste wax and they look Brand NEW!

The materials are about $15 bucks and will do about 6-8 sets of liners. The items listed are from a Place called Rockler Woodworking and Hardware! Page 104 of their new catalog. They're at www.Rockler.com or call 1-800-279-4441 or just call and ask for a Free Catalog. Now you all must die! Just Kidding? Post this where every one can find this info! This WORKS! And has been a very bad problem with the S&W Pres. Boxes For Years!

This is the FIX!

You can do it! Very easy, The blue felt can be purchased from any fabric store and I use 3M or elmers spray adhesive. They also sell the foam for the top.
Clean off old material and blow clean with compressed air
1 cut a oversized piece of felt, I usually go about 3 inches bigger all the way around
2 spray glue on liner, make sure you get it in all the crevices, don't soak it with glue just a nice even coat.
3 set the felt over the liner and start at the top and work your way down pressing it into the mold of the gun and flat areas, it sticks pretty good and the felt gives a little leaving no wrinkles, you may need to lift a little at the bottom corner of the grip area and stretch it a bit to ensure no wrinkles.
4 now when that is done spray glue on the edges, I usually do the long ones first and cut a slit in the corners 90 degrees then do the short sides then trim the excess flush
The glue sets pretty quick, now you can cut a slit with a razorblade where the tool compartment is, start about 3/4" in from the edges in the middle and end the cut about the same on opposite end, now cut a slit up and down at the ends so you can fold that into the edges of the tool tray. Then do the lid, I usually take a ice pic after and poke a hole to put the gold emblem back in.
It is very easy, try the top foam piece first so you can get a feel of how the glue sets.Give it a try you will be amazed on how easy and fast you can reline a pres box, Hope this helps.

Wow thanks for the replies.. TWO different methods.. I knew you guy's would come through.. but you bring up another question.. was the original FELT or FLOCKED??

I believe they were "flocked" but to tell you the truth I have never seen a 80's pres box that was not in need of a makeover, now the earlier ones with the gun facing left and the tools exposed held up much better, except for cracking. I think the 80's plastic tray is a little thicker and holds up better. I have never tried the "flocking method" in the first post so I can't knock it, try watching the auction sites and you can usually pick up pres boxes for $50 or so and try it out on one of those first and see what you think, then you have a nice box for another gun. I was nervous the first time I tried it also, now I can do about 2 per hour, it gives me something to do in the winter and it looks nice in the safe all of those wood boxes stacked up and even nicer when they are filled with N frames!

I love this place.........:D:D:D

Thanks to all.. I checked and Woodcrafter carries the flocking material.. got one about 5 miles from the house.. :D I'll keep you guy's posted.. and thanks again..

i purchased my 29-2 new in 1976...with the described box....it has one small crack but...other than that its fine...no loss of flocking that seems so common to these trays...i do have a shallow scratch on the top....perhaps furniture polish would take it out?
