Today at the local gun show, I was chatting with a dealer that I have known for quite a long time and have bought more than a few guns from. He has been retiring from the show circuit for some time and this weekend will be his last big show (said he will continue with one smaller one-day show for fun).

I helped reduce his inventory by bringing home the subject gun. I sold my last Pre-29 some years ago and have missed it. This one is in a little lower condition and is just the bare gun. SN is S179078 so should be from 1957. 4-screw frame. The SN appears on the butt, in the frame window and on the back of the extractor star, but nowhere else. 6 1/2" barrel and blue finish.

The grips looks nice, but are not numbered and have been butchered. The seller thinks the gun may have had a lanyard ring stirrup installed at one point (def NOT drilled!). Just as likely these grips came from a different gun as you can see a line on both sides of the sideplates where it previously wore some larger stocks. The stocks also have some gunk near the trigger guard area. Looks like maybe wax or resin and it is pretty hard. No idea what it is or why it might be there.

The grips do seem to have some "Coke bottle" swell around the diamonds.

Overall condition is probably "Very Good". A little finish loss at the usual high points and some staining of the bluing with one spot of actual rust scale at the top left rear beneath the rear sight. Not sure if the lack of other serial numbers means a re-barrel and new cylinder, or just unmarked.

I'm happy to have the revolver! I paid $1400 out the door on my C&R license. I'll post some additional pictures in a follow-on post. I welcome any questions or comments or additional info.

My supervisor and I bought a similar pistol today, serial number S180xxx in the same condition at a gun show in North Idaho. Now, what do I do with the other pre-29 we own?

Nice, everyone needs at least one of those early 44 Magnums. I'd say the price was pretty good. At least the stocks that are butchered weren't "cokes" so there's that; and they would not have been numbered. The grips "trace" probably is from rubber grips that were on it for awhile. They tend to hold water and over time that doesn't do anything good for the steel underneath. By the time this one was manufactured it probably wouldn't have had an SN on the barrel or cylinder so it is correct as it is I think. I have SN S172898 also without the SN in the ejector shroud or on the back of the cylinder. Enjoy it.

Very nice! I agree, the stocks are not original to that particular 44 Magnum, but were modified to fit an N-frame that had a lanyard, probably a Model 1917. It looks like your 44 Magnum has been shot a fair amount and based on the corrosion on the frame, wore rubber grips before the wooden stocks were swapped in.

All in all, it's still a very nice 4-screw .44 Magnum. It has a few freckles, and doesn't have the original Coke Bottle stocks, but $1400 is a very fair price for a relatively rare 4-screw. This is a revolver that you won't mind taking to the range, and it'll be a blast to shoot (pun intended!). As stated above, every S&W aficionado should own at least one vintage .44 Magnum. I was fortunate to pick up my minty 6-1/2" 4-screw a few years ago (with an incorrect mahogany presentation case), for $1600. Definitely one of the favorites in my modest collection. Enjoy!

I have a pair of Altamont N-Frame SB "Cokes" on order for this. Will see if I like them.

In the meantime, how do you think it looks with some smooth targets?

Actually, they don't really fit all that well, but I think they look good. Quite a bit newer than the gun, I think, but I don't know how old they are really.
