Really Cheap Beer

Binny's is a large liquor store chain out of the Chicago area. They opened a store where I live last year and I was visiting there yesterday. They have a 30 pack of Hamms for $12.99. I called my host in South Dakota to see if he wanted any for the bunkhouse. He said "Bring a truckload." I told him I didn't have that much room. I also got him a 30 pack of Busch in camo and blaze orange cans. It was costly at $14.99.

Years ago I could drink a truckload of Hamm's or Busch beer and feel pretty good. It wasn't considered "cheap beer" back then. Oh how times have changed.

Years ago, I had a friend that was recently divorced..He would come by my house to wash and detail his vehicle..Almost weekly..
At that time beer could not be sold until noon on Sundays..
So he would drink some of my Bud/Miller product's and then leave before the noon purchase ..
I bought a case of Schaffers lite, hid my bud and millers..
Next time he showed up he had his own beer..And trips thereafter..



Hamm's , PBR, are not bad when served very cold and not past their Best by date..And free !!

I can remember back 40 years ago when I 1st started drinking IPAs. Ballantine was the only domestic maker of this beer and initially it certainly was an acquired taste.
For whatever reason this beer has caught on like wildfire in the past few years and we are now getting a lot of different imported versions as well as some domestic ones.
I guess it's kind of like single malt scotch's. You either love it or hate it.

The Land of Sky Blue Waters is reference to Minnesota where it was produced for years before the brand was sold multiple times, now part of Miller.

Hamms had some of the best commercials of the 50's & 60's and their promotional signs etc were great. The Hamms beer bear was a true advertising icon.

What a shame that many brands of beer have disappeared, or have been bought out by large breweries over the years. Some brands were good and some not so good but the variety was much better then.

I remember "A-1 Pilsner Beer" made in Phoenix, AZ. It was delightful. By my late teens it was gone. I have since discovered a Mexican beer that tastes just like I remember A-1. But, after that first taste it deteriorates rapidly. The best across the board beer I have ever tasted was during a trip to New Zealand and Australia in 1985. That stuff was awful but it was cheap.

Really cheap beer reminds me of nickel/plastic cup beer night at the Flying Dutchman club in the 70's. That way you got an immediate jump on headache and nausea as soon as you started drinking.

Years ago I visited a friend in Minneapolis and he took me to the Hamms Brewery which I think was in St Paul. The Brewery had been sold, but due to Hamms "fire brewing" technique it was not converted to brew any of the beers with Miller's name. The beer in the tap room which had never been out of a cool storage area or shipped and was still fresh was quite good. Some where on that trip I came up with an original Grain Belt glass and pitcher.

I believe the best beer I ever had was free. I don't remember the brand name but it was pretty good.
