Got myself a problem. Because I am so well coordinated, I managed to let my 19-3 slide out of my lap onto the floor. I "thought" I managed to catch it. Happily I did manage not to let the frame, barrel, etc. impact on the floor. What did hit was the rear sight blade. This is a four inch revolver, shooter grade. I have never messed up a rear sight on any firearm, much less a S&W. If I understand correctly, I am supposed to break the screw off and remove the blade, then replace w/a new blade and screw? That sounds rather unusual. Would I be better off replacing the entire assembly? I looked at borrowing the rear sight of my 66-2 since it is four inch but I've no idea if the screws off later revolvers are the same or a different thread. Don't want to cross thread anything. Is there a source for what height rear sight blade would have been installed at the factory? If this is a break and replace type operation, where can I get the screw driver for the left side? Very much appreciate any help anyone might find time to offer. Sincerely. bruce.

Yes, the accepted manner in which to replace the sight blade is to break the adjustment screw and replace it with a new one since you need to stake / peen the end of the screw.

It isn’t difficult. You can buy the blade and screw/nut kit for about $12. Staking/flaring the new screw is the hardest part. Measure the old sight with calipers, the height of the solid part not the notch. Buy one close to the measurement, then fine tune with the elevation.

If it is a shooter grade gun and just the sight blade is bent, take a crescent wrench and put it on the top of the sight blade. Carefully and slowly using adequate force straighten it out. I did this on a 586 successfully. Good luck.
