I helped a friend and neighbor down the street last weekend and he was so appreciative that I repaired his tankless hot water, he got me a bottle of Woodford's Reserve Double Oaked Bourbon. Guess he does not like taking cold showers - lol. Anyway a friend and I tried it a few nights ago and it is really excellent Bourbon!

Two days later I repaired a few other items for the same guy and last evening he and his wife came over and he got me a bottle of Knob Creek, 120 proof, single barrel 9 year old reserve. I am usually not really a Knob Creek Guy, however this particular bottle is absolutely spectacular! I hoper he needs something else fixed soon! :D :D

One last Bourbon item from last evening. We went out to dinner and on the menu of Ford's was an Old Fashion with Honey Smoked Bacon in it. I have never seen that before but my wife's friend ordered one and I must say after taking a sip, it was pretty good!

Difficult for me to try anything else. I currently have 4 bottles with 1 or 2 drinks out of each. Sticking with Dickel 12, often toasting Absalom. Saw a great blog quote on the Total Wine website pertaining to Crown Royal XO:

The Woodford Double Oaked is one of my favorites. Don't believe I've had that particular Knob Creek but have had some great Old Fashioneds made with Knob Creek.

After having a few bottles of regular Knob Creek I would not have bought another Knob Creek, HOWEVER, this particular version happens to be incredible and actually makes up for the lackluster bottles I have had in the past!

HINT: In the past I always made Old fashion's with Bourbon, however as of this past Thanksgiving at my Son and DIL's home up North, I started using Rye - he made me one and I was sold! I use either Old Overholt or Rittenhouse - both are reasonably priced and perfect for mixed drinks.

While I am SURE the Double Oaked Woodford's would make an excellent OF, I'd hate to sort of "waste" that on a mixed drink - I'd much prefer saving that to enjoy neat or on the rocks. If you like OF's, please try the Rittenhouse Rye - I think you will like it quite a bit. Let me know if you do. Cheers!

Originally an Old Fashioned was made with Rye. The first rye I tried a long time ago was Bulleit and I didn't care for it. I have since indulged in several bottles of Templeton Rye 6 year. Good stuff! It is produced in the small Iowa town of Templeton and has a very interesting history. Currently it is only in regional distribution but they are expanding. If it is available in your area, try it!
Woodford Reserve also has a Rye, I recently picked up a half size bottle of it but haven't tried it yet. Same on the Rittenhouse. Haven't tried either cuz I've been under the weather and nothing tastes right so will wait a bit.

I think you need to share the name and location of this person. I would love to get in on this action. I fix things around the house and my wife doesn't buy me a bottle of bourbon.

Glad to hear the Woodford Double Oaked is good. I bought a bottle for a friend as a retirement gift last December. Not being a whiskey drinker, I was not sure what to get.

That was a nice gift from your friend, but so was the repair job.

I think the Knob Creek Single Barrel is well worth having in the cabinet and a big step up from the base line.

I tried a bottle of the Woodford Double Oak awhile back and really didn't like it. Another I won't buy again is Basil Hayden Toasted. Way over priced for a marginal bourbon.

Lately my go to pours are Buffalo Trace, Four Roses Small Batch and William Evans 1792 Small Batch.

Lets just say a guy wants to try a above average bourbon for the first time.

Any agreed upon bourbons out there or is there just that much variation.

That is kind of tough because there are lot of good bourbons and peoples taste vary. Also, price point pain comes into the equation. Being a new to bourbon makes a difference too. What I enjoyed 50 years ago can taste pretty boring now.

One I found many agree upon that doesn't break the bank and seems to be easier to find is Henry McKenna Bottled in Bond 10 year old. Another is Colonel E. H. Taylor Single Bottle or Small Batch would be a good choice but can be hard to find priced at retail. I put W.L. Weller, William Evans 1792 and Old Forester in there too.

On the budget end any of the Four Roses offerings, William Evans Bottle in Bond, Buffalo Trace and Wild Turkey 101.

Yes, there is a LOT of variation. Some dependent on the mash bill, high rye or wheated. Proof from 80 to 100 and more.
My personal suggestions would be the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, Heaven Hill BnB. and one of the Rabbit Hole selections.
