Hello ... I came across a used model 65-4 at the LGS with a good amount of marring as shown in the attached photos. The revolver is tight with solid timing, and shows no signs of abuse or hot load usage. That said, I have owned numerous S&Ws over the years and never seen marring to this extent. Is this indicative of a problem that I should avoid, or simply age and use? Thank you in advance.

First thought I had was excessive endshake with the cylinder slapping the recoil shield like that… I would have to be a screaming deal before I would buy that one…

Welcome to the S&W Forums. That Model 64 looks to have been shot a lot, might have also had multiple incidents of the extractor rod unscrewing and/or debris under the extractor causing a lot of wear on the recoil shield. With no significant end shake, I would wonder if it had shims added to the cylinder or a recent trip to a gunsmith to correct excessive end shake. With that much wear, I'd be leary.

Just one of the possible indicators, A. it was used with "HOT" reloads, with primers failing and pressure and soot blowing out the back, and B. wasn't cleaned very well. The damage could very well be from the extractor rod unscrewing, and the owner "slamming" the cylinder shut. Without a really close inspection of this, I'd steer away from it.

Somebody liked to slap the loaded cylinder shut ...
I would have it checked out by a good gunsmith ...
If you live in Louisiana , Clark Custom Guns could do a Tune-up and trigger job and you would be good to go .
It's a nice revolver and just needs a little TLC !

Welcome to the forum from Baton Rouge , Louisiana !

Thank you everyone for your feedback. Something is definitely amiss with this one, and I'll leave it for someone else to deal with.

It might be a completely serviceable revolver but that would really be bothersome for me. I'd have to walk away I think.
