Hi. I'm trying to evaluate an S&W from the 1950s for purchase. I have seen mention about examining the recoil shield to gauge wear/usage.

I have only a handful of S&Ws and none of them really have any markings on the recoil shield. Could someone please tell me what I should be looking for?

Thank You,
James

After A LOT of firing the base of the cartridge will leave circular wear marks on the recoil shield.

It's from them shifting backward in the cylinder during recoil and bouncing off the recoil shield.

Not blued steel, but you get the idea.

Here's a 27-2 that was shot a lot.
