Picked up a 13lb recoil spring to help with some recoil management but try as I might I cannot unscrew the hex screw on the guide rod. I have tried everything I can think of short of a gunsmith but it will not budge. It seems simple enough but I'm having issues with maintaining enough pressure on the guide rod to turn the screw.

Any help is appreciated.

Here is how I initially found out what must be done:

I change M&P recoil springs by putting the lower end of the rod in a soft-jaw vise and using an exact fitting socket on the top end bolt. Makes no marks, works every time when using the correct machine tools.

The recoil spring should be matched to the power of the ammunition, not "recoil management?" When the empties land 3 to 6 feet away shooting standing, the recoil spring is correct.
