I'm getting a DPMS "Oracle", an "AR-10". It's a .308 version of an AR-15.... It comes with a rail and no sights or optics. I want to put iron sights on it. Please give me your suggestions (iron, not polymer).....

SRanch111,

My only experience with iron sights on an AR with a rail, thus far, has been with my Stag M4. This rifle came with the Stag rear sight and uses the standard M4/AR-15 "G.I.", fixed front sight.

If for no other reason than the quality of their other products, I would suggest Magpul MBUS front and real sights. I have a DPMS Oracle/LR .308 rifle and have nothing but good things to say about that product. My choice was to mount an optic and a Vortex Diamondback HP, 4 x 16 x 42, in Leupold QRW mounts got the nod.

This rifle/scope combination, with the appropriate load for the Sierra 165 Sierra Game King, has proven extremely accurate and effective on deer and coyotes. The Sierra 168 BTHP match bullets provide impressive MOA and sub-MOA groups at and beyond 100 yards.

Enjoy the rifle, you made a great choice!

Assuming you're using them as primary sights, you want fixed sights (not folding). The Daniel Defense fixed front/rear set (usually about $120) would be my choice.

If you're adding an optic later, I've always been impressed with Yankee Hill's folding sights. I'm still mad at Troy Industries for their shenanigans earlier this decade so I avoid their stuff (though it's high quality).

Thanks gents! JD, the owners manual says I'm supposed to clean the chamber and bore after EVERY round for the first 20 rounds! Did you do that???

The highest quality rear sight i've found for the least amount of money is one of the brand new surplus USMC KAC micro's.
You can find them on ebay for under $50. You can also buy the exact same sight minus the USMC affiliation for $200.

They are calibrated for 5.56 ballistics though.

Thanks gents! JD, the owners manual says I'm supposed to clean the chamber and bore after EVERY round for the first 20 rounds! Did you do that???

I throughly cleaned the rifle and bore prior to shooting the rifle. I then shot five (5) shot groups and "cleaned" the bore with a patch soaked with Butch's Bore Shine after each group for the first 20 rounds. This is the same method that I have used for my match rifles and it seems to work well for me.

The manual also discussed the BCG and keeping it lubed. My rifle came with a foil package of a lube that DPMS recommended. I have found that this rifle, as do many AR's, runs well when wet.

I use a synthetic "grease" on the "flats/rails" of the BCG where they contact the inside of the upper. I have experienced no failures to feed or jams of any type with my rifle. The metal, DPMS mags, work very well as do the P Mags.

I use a 10 round P Mag for hunting. There is no magazine restriction for deer hunting in TN and the 10 round mag is very handy for use in a shooting house or tree stand.

On Jan. 3, this rifle took another buck at 230 yards. I don't take shots like that for granted or lightly. As a high power competitor for over thirty years, I have to make sure that rifle/ammo combination can perform. My experiences with this rifle and the load that performs the best, provided me with the confidence to make that shot. I still prefer to take shoots at shorter ranges to
insure a clean, ethical kill.
