Recommendations?

I have an H&K USPc .45 with a stainless (I assume) slide.

I'd like to get the slide blackened, blued, whatever. I am leery of "coatings". If it were not for the fact that the slide is serial numbered to the gun, I'd trade someone for a black slide!

Recommendations for this work?

I may be mistaken, but my understanding is that stainless generally doesn't take bluing because bluing is a form of rust.

ShooBoy may be able to speak up, I don't know what he's using to make his "sporter" hammers but those are (I believe) blackened steel.

The other option is DuraCoat, which has gotten excellent reviews everywhere. I'm strongly considering it for my 870, which is starting to show its <STRIKE>abuse</STRIKE> age.

I would think considering the expense, and the maybe of changing color, might just consider in investing in another firearm

I was just thinking that the other day. Summer is pretty darn busy for us, since we're trying to buy a house, but I can probably arrange a Saturday off.

yeah--I considered that--but I really like the way it shoots for me, and I've already configured it with a left-hand safety.

I really would be happy if someone could just "dunk" it--no polish, nothing. I know that's problematic given its stainless construction.

Brownell's used to make a special hot bluing salt for stainless steel. I used it for a number of years and probably refinished more than a thousand M1 Garand gas cylinders using that stuff. Nasty to work with, but it worked 98% of the time depending on the stainless alloy. From what I hear Brownells no longer sells those special stainless bluing salts.

Robar took a standard Springfield 1911 I have and did a custom two tone. Very nice workmanship and they know autoloaders.

My Sig/Sauer P220R Carry slide is stamped "STAINLESS" but has what looks to me to be a black oxide or anodized finish.

Not sure how SIG does it, but it can be done.

You can apparently have it Melonited by an gunsmith or two. The same treatment as S&W applies to the slides on M&Ps.
