Wife bought me a 686+ pc for my birthday and am looking to
put a red dot of some kind on it and then try to find a holster that it will fit it with it on ..

My old eyes give me trouble after the 50 yard mark with my bifocals .. inside of that doesn't seem to bother me most days !!

Any one out there with a red dot on their 686 or other 357 pistols ?? What mount did you go with and the red dot you chose to use !!

How has your red dot and mount performed .. any loosening of the red dot mount ??

Any and all info would be very helpful to me .. I have a cheap dot on my AR but don't want to use it ..

tried it years ago. The optic was a crappy Jpoint that had to little elevation adjustment that wedges were needed to zero it.
Threw that in the trash.
Later I have had great results with both Trijicon RMR and Vortex Venom.
Saving up Cabelas points for another Venom for my Model 69.

My steel challenge gun is a 4" 66. I put a Raptor Engineering base on it and originally a Burris FF3. Wanted to buy a new gadget so I replaced the Burris with a Leupold Deltapoint.

I searched through my holster barn and found this Kramer paddle holster that cost me little. I took an Xacto knife to it, some sandpaper and brown magic marker....

voila, a custom fit optic holster...

I use a Weaver 401 Top Mount on my mod 686-5 that came drilled and tapped and also on my 686-2 that I had drilled and tapped. Both topped with a Simmons Red Dot tube that has Variable MOA dots from 3-10 I believe. Very cheap mount. Less than $10 and the Red Dot is not a high end. Both have performed flawless. They hold zero and nothing has loosened up. Did use Blue Locktite on the dash 2 but the dash 5 was mounted naked over a year ago and has probably 1000 rounds of magnum loads through it. I have also used the discontinued Weaver 307 no drill mount. Clamps around frame in front of cylinder and has a screw that uses the rear sight screws slot. This mount has really surprised me with how it holds zero. Most of its use has been with .38 target loads but has worked like a charm. I also have. Similar Burris no drill mount that only works with Burris rings and it does ok not as good as the Weaver no drill.

Raptor Engineering mount all the way. I have one on my 617 and one on my 686 both with Vortex Venom red dots which makes for a great compact setup. The 617 will shoot under 1" groups at 45 yards with the 3 mil dot. I still need to wring out the 686.
