I currently use Promo in my 38's at the same weight as Red Dot. I'm loading 148 gr wadcutters and, so far, good results and I've fired quite a few rounds. My question is, does anybody have a Red Dot load that can be used for a 125gr JHP? I'd like to load a few but unsure of using Red Dot. Also, my gun can handle +P loads if that makes a difference.

I have loaded a lot of 38s with Rdot....but not jacketed so I had to go look at the books. Hodgdon 26 says 4.6 is a standard pressure tested load with jacketed 125s-14,400 CUP.

In my J frame snub nose with a win. or Rem. Jhp bullet with a oal of around 1.43 +/- per brass and bullet with Red Dot I can get from 777 to 903 fps.

In a 6" K frame with a 125 XTP at 1.44 OAL Red Dot will come in at around 685 to 996 fps.

Type of primers, crimp pressure and OAL of your brass will all play a part on your pressures and velocity.

Hopefully you have a manual with Red Dot data...........it is being left out of a lot of the newer manuals.

As a note:
the powder amount in post #3 in my 6" comes out at a factory 945 fps.

Safe loading.

Richard Lee says 3.9 red dot for 950 fps 125 grain Jacketed.
This is the same as in the Hercules Reloaders Guide.

4.1 red dot for +p at 965 fps 17,000 psi. From the Hercules reloaders guide.

Have fun

Not disputing David R's post-but an advisement-Lee's book compiles manufacturer data (as David's post implies)....and he got his Alliant data at the time when Alliant had the most ridiculously pathetic .38 special loads in history. -For a while it had me confused because max loads were suddenly 15-25% lower than what I'd been using. . Note the difference between the Hodgdon data and Lee's in this thread.

The data below is from Alliant around 2005. The loads listed are maximum and you are expected to calculate start load by reducing the load by 10%.

Alliant is now hiding much of it's pistol data with shotgun powders. Go to their site, get a 12 gauge load and then click on Red Dot when it asks for all loads with that powder.

Yes...............
Red , Green & Blue are fading in the distance................

Making room for the newer Power Pistol and the new kid on the block that will be out soon ?? (86 ) If it works out, maybe Herco is next ?

I think Promo will replace Red Dot as they are one in the same from what I've read.
Please not Herco...... a normal year I go threw 2 8lbs kegs of Herco. I use it in 12ga, 20ga, 28ga, 44mag, 357mag and 45lc.

Love that powder
