I am thinking of putting a red dot sight on my S&W model 19 because of my 77 year old eyes. Are there any suggestions about the mounts and the sight itself. I am not going to go for the very expensive models. Thanks

There are lot's of them available and the recent S&Ws are already drilled and tapped for a mount.
That said, I only have one mounted and it's on an N Frame 629. It sure helps old eyes. I'd probably mount more, but all my other S&Ws are pre D&T models.
I like this Bushnell. It's a bit larger than many, but it is just right for me.

As for mounts the Allchin is also popular:

I personally prefer the Raptor Engineering mount but they seem to be out of business. If you have a newer S&W the frame is already drilled and tapped for the mount, just remove the rear sight and screw in the mount. If it's an older 19 you will need to have the frame drilled and tapped for just about any mount you will install.

A B Square mount will replace the rear sight and no drilling.

I have red dots on all my pistols. I've used all the mounts and red dots mentioned above. About 25.
The best mount for S&W revolvers is the one made by Allchin.

The best dots for the none are the ones by Holosun and Swamp Fox. Both offer standard size the smaller ones. The smaller ones look better on a revolver.

I second the recommendation for the Allchin mounts. I have one on my Model 19 Carry Comp and love it with the Holosun HS507C-X2. This red dot has a large circle that makes it really easy to find the dot. Once you have the dot in view, the circle disappears.
The quality of the Allchin mount is fantastic and the design allows the red dot to sit very low.
They are not universal for all red dots. Be sure to pick the one for your specific red dot.
