Red dot or scope?

I do pretty well on a IPSC target at 200 yards with my Aimpoint dots.

Even with a scoped bolt action I'm not much good at anything past 200 yards. So for me it's a Dot. But my AR's are for CQB.

If I was a hunter I might go the scope route.

Depends on your style of shooting. Quick, close shooting like steel shooting, go with a red dot. More distance, shooting from the bench, shooting for groups, or hunting, go with a scope.

Red Dot for close zombies, scope for 100+ yard zombies. They move pretty slow so they're easy to target at any distance.

I do most of my shooting off the bench at 75 yards, Using a burris AR-332 (scope) and it been a real champ. Plus I can't really use a red dot well due to my eye issues. (astigmatism [sp])

I use scopes on my higher "HP" rifles and Dots on the lower "hp" like 22's. You need a higher $$ Dot on the more "HP" weapons. The cheaper just don't hold up as well.

I went with a Millet DMS-1.
To me it's the best of both worlds, illuminated dot reticle with 1-4 variable power.
I can leave it on 1 power as a red dot, or shift up to 4 power for use as a scope.
And the dot diameter doesn't change.
I use the same set up on one of my regular ARs as well.

I couldn't be more pleased with my Vortex Strikefire mated with my Primary Arms 3x long-relief magnifier in an ADM mount.

The optics work wonderfully, and I honestly couldn't ask for more. From chasing squirrels through the trees to punching paper, this set-up gets the job done.

I REALLY like the Vortex; and this is coming from someone who has 4 Aimpints on other rifles.

For low-light, early evening use, it's really fun to strap on the L72, also:

Does this setup give you absolute cowitness?

Does this setup give you absolute cowitness?

Yes, it does.

I split the FSP w/ the Vortex's mount.

I have no complaints what-so-ever.

Due to the fact that Vortex has a LIFETIME warranty, I may just involve it in some torture tests and create a long, detailed post. I'm going to have to talk to Marshall @ Primary Arms about the 3x abuse before I do it to make sure it may fall under a warranty claim. Granted, this won't be total abuse, but possible real-world situational abuse.

Let me add that I used to be hung up on "cowitness" until I got my first set of flip-down sights.

Now, I'd much rather just flip the sights down and run a dot.

Dot fails? WGAF? Flip a lever, throw the dot to the side, push some buttons, and flip up your BUIS.

Red dots/reflex sights are what they are for a reason -- FAST.

There's no real need to line up a third factor into the equasion (1= rear sight, 2= front sight, 3= red dot). Just do the dot, and keep it simple, stupid (KISS).

After I unwrapped my head around the cowitness thing, I've expanded my horizons much.

Think about it -- when you use a traditional scope on a rifle -- you simply look through the scope, and nothing else, right? OK. Now, wrap your head around the idea of looking through just a red dot/reflex sight, and then you're gettin' it! :)

Cowitness is not needed, IMHO. However, a good QR mount is. :D

That makes a lot of sense.....I gues my main factor would be will it all fit over the stock Magpul MBUS.... And his picture is showing yes..... I started another threading questioning the primary arms options! http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...ion-about-primary-arms-red-dot-magnifier.html Not to rob the thread ... just trying to learn
