If I wanted to mount a red dot on a m&p 15-22 but keep my mbus folding sights available, what are the best recommendations? I don't want to co witness, maybe some kind of peep sight?

just get a simple QD riser.. like a UTG/Leapers. That way, you can hit the QD, take off the riser/red dot, slap it on a different rail out of the way and use the MBUS. And, depending on the red dot + what riser you get + what sights you have, you might just get the added bonus of something you don't want.. cowitness.

Thanks for the input!! I think I might try and put a holographic sight on and hopefully achieve absolute cowitness! Any recommendations?

Holographic = Eotech. For just good red dot, Bushnell TRS-25 on a QD riser like UTG or a Primary Arms micro red dot on their QD riser IF you can find one.

Welcome.

A riser that is 1" will let you co-witness with the iron sights in the lower 1/3 of the red dot sight. A .83" riser will get you absolute co-witness with the irons in the center of the RDS. I prefer lower 1/3 as it gives you more field of view unobstructed.

Some popular RDS are the Vortex Sparc and Strikefire, Primary Arms Micro Dot, Bushnell TRS-25, several others, and of course, you can always pony up and go EOtech or Aimpoint for a military-grade sight, but it will cost you more than the rifle.

Unlike a scope, remember not to look into the sight, just look for the red dot, both eyes open. That's the secret to shooting with a RDS.

If you don't want to co-witness, just turn your red dot off. Then, use your irons and sight through it. I do it all the time when I feel like shooting irons but still have a great red dot available and don't have to move or quick disconnect anything. Primary Arms Multi Rectal, 30mm or Micro Red Dot are great options and should be back in stock this month.

I went with Primary Arms M3 and Burris PEPR QD mount. Works great, gives lower 1/3 co-witness.

That's what co-witnessing is.

Be careful, you can get pinkeye from looking through one of those. ;)

 Sounds like it could take out both eyes at the same time.

I believe that the EoTech XPS provides an absolute co-witness, while the EXPS model is 7mm higher, giving a lower 1/3 co-witness. (If I'm wrong, I hope someone here will correct me!)

I'm saving for the XPS model as I prefer absolute. Just debating on whether to get a magnifier with it, or just swap for a scope for longer range shots.

Haha on the pink eye!! And thanks again, I don't think the mrs. Is gonna go for an eotech so I'm probably gonna be in the $100 range.

^^ That sounds bad, I'm lucky to even get the rifle. We have two young children at home so money is tight, but my boy is 4 so he's ready to get away from my starter single shot .22 rifle!
