This is not a good thing, especially today. Low humidity and gusty winds are going on. Guess I'll have to be extra diligent on illegal fireworks watch given how dry the trees and shrubs are in my part of town. Maybe the southern parts of the valley that just smashed by some storms this week will be OK, but by my house everything is parched.

The town did their fireworks last Saturday. They caught the desert on fire behind the fairgrounds. That meets up with desert behind my house.

All the firetrucks showed up, but wind direction was favorable, so I wasn't too worried.

We just got a good soaking which should minimize any hazards with fireworks this evening. Of course, it is liable to rain again, we have been getting daily or twice or three times daily, thunderstorms for about a month now. You could burn a wet elephant quicker than starting a forest fire around here. The small town near me has a fairly good display on the 4th.

Used to live in the high desert country in the east of the state. Nearest town was 10 miles and population 5000. It sat down in a hole and they set the fireworks off from the viewpoint above town. Every single year, without exception, they set fire to the hillside. The biggest cheers weren't for the finale, they were for the first sign of flames on the hill. Of course, it was the fire department that set them off, so they were already there with their trucks anyway. But the hill catching fire was definitely part of the show.

Winds up to 20 mph are forecast here for tonight. I wonder what the threshold is for canceling the big shows the casinos are supposed to put on.
