Red Ramp Replacement ?

My 29-2 has (or should I say, "had") a red insert on the front blade. For quite a while, it was sort of loose, but not enough to be unusable, but recently the whole insert fell out and was lost. The question now is, "Where can I get it fixed and by whom?" Is there some sort of mix-it-yourself kit with two part plastic epoxy I can use to make my own repair, does it need to go to some specialized gunsmith, or must I send it back home to Smith for that work to be done?

I've never tried this, but was told by an older gent that he and his buddies used translucent colored plastic toothbrush handles... hacksaw out a piece that was close and file it to fit... sort of a proto-fiber-optic sight

The factory insert is just a solid piece of plastic as well; not epoxy or anything. Brownells used to carry the inserts, and they still might but I haven't checked recently.

I've got one that is loose myself and will be trying the toothbrush method soon.

You can buy kits from Brownell's, or make it yourself with day-glo orange paint and a little epoxy mixed together. Make sure you use a release agent (like you do when glass beeding a barreled action in a rifle) on both side of the sight where you don't want anything to stick, and dam up the sides of the sight blade with old pop sickle sticks, and a small clamp. When cured, remove the dam, and sand to suit.

Just and FYI. Before you go to the trouble of replacing your inserts, I have used regular old super glue to fix a few of them now that were loose, on both 25's and 29's, and I don't shoot watered down loads in mine. The sights have remained tightly seated for quite some time now with no signs of loosening. I just rock the insert over away from the side that is loosest, and put a drop or two under it. Quickly wipe any excess off the sides of the blade and ramp with a good solvent, and let is set for a day or two.
